I would appreciate some advice about HF radios. I don't want to start another HF=satphone war; just seeking some informed advice. I may have the opportunity to buy a secondhand Barrett 550 for about $1,500. The unit is complete with antenna etc. I understand that it is tuned (?) for at least VKS737 and Radtel. Is the 550 OK? Is the price reasonable? Anything I should look out for?

Keith,Have a look at the Vehicle Feature on the Barrett 550 radio located on this site in the Hot Topics menu under Vehicle setup. You will find out heaps of details on the Barrett 950 which is the model up from the 550 however the features are very very similiar. In fact we used and sold a 550 a few years back (because Barrett was kind enough to give us a 950) however I would recommend the 550 as it is a great unit. As for the cost is the antenna an auto tunner or fixed whip system. This will be the price determining aspect for me. A fixed whip costs about 4-500 new and an auto tunner costs about 1500 new. A few years back the entire system with Auto antenna was about $3000. Hope this helps. David

Thanks David. I checked out the info in Vehicle Features and also downloaded the specs of the 950 from Barretts site. I am fairly sure that the antenna is an auto tuner. If this is the case, $1,500 for the complete unit would seem to be a good price?

Keith,

Just be careful which auto tune antenna comes with the unit. There are previous models that were built that tended to crack around the support flutes on the outside casing. I think this model of antenna was white and the new improved model is grey. You can ring Barrett in WA to check this out before you purchase the unit. I have the 550 with remote head and would recommend it to anyone. Stuart
