yo truckster

i d/l installed it today and there have been no issues, just more training of another firewall, so i turned my other one off. My wireless networking connection is different but it works. Apart from that I see no othe major changes.

(TOUCH WOOD ON ALL THE ABOVE!)

No probs so far after a couple of weeks. Wireless network still works. I still keep getting unwanted pop up messages on a Win ME laptop connected to the network. Frequent reminders of security advice on server, but I can live with that.

It's all been sweet here.

I haven't plugged the laptop into the network at home yet, so will see what happens when I do.

It does tell me that it can't find a virus protection software, apparently there is a bug between SP2 and Symantec, (virus software is still operational, just SP2 can't detect it)

Truckster, we've got it on several PC's at work. No problems so far. The firewall will need training but thats a no brainer.

Truckster,

Got it on both dekstop and workstation at home and all is fine. It only reset some of my minor customisations (couple of QuickLaunch shortcuts and some custom Sent To Items).

I had a similar issue with it complaining about not finding Nortons, but after updating Nortons, the Security Center was finally happy and was able to see that NAV was installed properly and running.

However, rolled it out onto a couple of workstations at work and it seems to have agrivated Citrix's already flakey printing, but with a bit of driver tweaking I may be able to get around this.

So all in all, no major issues to report thus far from my experience.

cheers,
Sam.

That would have to have been the longest update in history! The whole process took about 45mins to an hour.

There are different size upgrades apparently. Mine was 110meg, mates was 145meg, and complete upgrade if you have not run patches before is over 280meg!

Gave up and went to bed, will see what happens when I try and reboot it tonight.

Hey Truckster dude,
sat thru it OK and it seems to work fine so far.
I finished about 20 minutes after you logged off

Mine was 100mB because i have SP1 and all the available updates installed.

Now imagine doing that on dialup :(

I did did on dial-up and it took 7 HOURS.

What is all this stuff about firewalls?, I don't understand this stuff.

I also have the message about not finding virus protection, but I did get the current live update from Symatec just before starting the download.

We are putting it on all our computers before they go out the door for both our computer shop and our surveillance company, no dramas yet, however I have a feeling next time we hook a Camera machine up on the net it's firewalls may cause complications. Like everything microsoft, when you disable these features you are no always guranteed that it has actually got rid of EVERYTHING.

What are the new features? Are they worth a 110 meg download?

The new features that I've seen are better Firewall Control and Wireless networking. They have also upgraded the windows update but haven't taken that for a spin yet - We had it on our network so unless you can get it as part of your download limit - its probably not worth it. Although I suspect there's a whole lot of fixes etc.. (and probably new bugs LOL)

Regarding XP in general.

I'm about to upgrade my system and was considering XP Pro as the OS over current 2000 Pro.

Are there any significant benefits??

I work at IBM and we are being told not to upgrade to SP2 for security reasons.

I'm not sure why, but I'll see if I can find out some more detail behind that stance.

Ok ... just looked at our intranet. The reason is...

"SP2 may change the behaviour of Internet Explorer and cause some application incompatibilties. IBM's large number of web applications will need to be tested and some modified to work correctly with SP2."

If it ain't broke don't fix it... Haven't had any security probs on my laptop (router's firewall takes care of that) and I won't risk SP2 until the dust has settled after a few months. Bet that by that time, there will be half a dozen further updates amounting to an SP3...
