Nick,
My 80 series has both red and green LED's the green lighting up with normal boost pressures, the red light indicates overboosting which long term can destroy an engine. I would say the turbos waste-
gate may either need adjustment or is malfunctioning, not relieving the high pressure larger turbos can generate... hope this helps a little.
Mark.

Hi Andrew,
Thats why i enjoy comming in here....that piece of info u added probably is the cause. If he takes your advice he will have saved himself a few quid as the dealer would NOT have told him that was the problem now would they.... assuming it was.
Love this

Thanks Angelo
A friend had his alt reconditioned twice with silver reco paint, and the third electrical guru said yeah mate i know what it is..2 minutes and no charge, and he was off on holidays again $4-500 lighter from the first 2 guys.
The earlier hdt had a design problem where the wiring harness was anchored to the body too close to the motor, and the vibs from the motor make the plug contacts loose too. Sometimes it is full of mud aswell, but most times the contacts can be squeezed a little and the last plastic plug to the body pried off, and the problem goes away for good.
The reason it is the cause is when you turn the ignition to on (b4 starting) all these lights come on to show you they work. They are actually getting earth thru the regulator in the alt while it is not charging.

Hi Nick,
The red light normally indiactes low or excessive pressure - it should not be on under normal running.
With the ignition on and the engine not running the red light is normally on - it shoukld go off a few secods after the engined is started. The previous Post that mentioned the alternator, if the fault was connected with the alternator, other wrning lights will noramlly be on. If you have a red warning light you normally have a green one as
well ( indiactes the turbo is working prescribed limits) which usually remains on while driving the vehicle. It may go off on a long down
hill run but the red light should not come on.
I would suggest that you fit a test guage to the turbo cross over pipe and take the vehickle for a run and compare the pressures against the data in the work
shop mannual.
