Researching EGT and Turbo diesels reliability found this very informative web site where they operate vehicles under similar conditions to ours

http://www.steves.co.za/General%20Service%20&%20Maintenance.htm

If it redirects you to the intro page ,navigate in and look up service repairs and maintainance on the RHS menu

Also tracked down this Boost/EGT guage that will display Metric and Imperial at

http://hoytmeter.com/pyroboost/pyroboost.htm

Not cheap but probably cheap insurance

One of these will be going on to the 100 series 1HZ (HZJ 105R) along with a Safari Intercooled Turbo on Monday.

Hope Im making a right move

Next 200,000Km will tell

Harrow,

Good luck with the fitting of the Turbo, I'd like to do the same to my 4.2 GU along with all the other stuff!!

Let us know the difference in performance, and where you got it done and how much etc (if you don't mind) also why did you choose the Safari, did you consider any other brands, what boost will the Safari deliver and do the mob that fit your turbo do a before and after dyno test?

Cheers Mate...........Browny

Hi Browny

choice came down to
experience in Turbos with the 1HZ ,
Kit Quality
Fitter's experience and attitude (pre and post Dyno's)
Claimed Figures Power up 45% and Torque up 50% with Intercooler

MTQ was the next best canidate

It was hard to actually see the product installed though I did see Safari and MTQ's but both on 80 series , and as for a test drive no way.

Talked to 4 fitters and not one agreed with the other,
re

Boost:
most use 10-12 psi

compensators/aneroids:
nb: my HZ has altitude compensator on the pump

3 no 1 yes (I feel just allows you to screw the fuel and still be safe in low boost situations) up Im just not after that much power and an EGT alarm and back off the loud pedal is my prefered option, I want to know whats going on (Injectors, dirty air cleaner,or other problem etc)

Intercoolers:
1 said a must (Safari and Safari website dosnt offer an Non Intercooled option for the 100 series 1HZ see note below) will fit without intercooler if you ask.
2 said If you want and can be done when you have more $ (dont want to scare you off by telling you it is best for reliability then putting it out of your price range with the extra $2000. price tag)
and 1 unnescessary "you will produce more power than is good for the motor or drivetrain" (but could not offer an intercooler option)

My approach with my vehicle is reliability first with moderate power / torque boost that can be maintained at altitude's and high ambient temperatures, and preventing overfueling (high EGT's , oil dilution ,soot , Economy and enviromental lean is green)
This the turbo specialist hope's to achive by high air cool dense charge (hence intercooler) and moderate fuel charges.

Exhausts:
1 No (Safari) I think he wanted me to save my money for the Intercooler
3 Yes cleaner larger air charge means cooler EGT ,less soot etc (unless you turn up the fuel to squeeze out even more power then you loose the other benifits).

My spin , when the bank balance recovers from the intercooler and not as critical as the intercooler

The 100 series 1HZ (post 04/98) Vs 80 Series 1HZ

3 of the Turbo specialists were recommending very frequent injector service at 25K to 50K , with one stating that the post 04/98 HZ has a different
Injectors (True)
Piston Head (had some on his desk , blown)
PreCombustion chambers

The bad news because of these changes the post 04/98 1HZ will not turbo as easy as the old 80 Series 1HZ, as injectors give up easier when turbo'd (clog soot up, ? overfueled chasing power) then EGT's rise pistons melt etc.

The good news, when this happens acording to one turbo specialists you can replace the PreCombustion chambers and Pistons ($1500 in parts only for us with the mechanical inclination) which allows you to then put 80 series injectors in and you are as good as the old 80 series to turbo.
(apparently they blew a few and had to repair, so retrofitted to 80 series untill they figured more regular injector servicing on their turbo'd 100 series was the answer, they also claimed high torque figures without intercoolers or aneroids so perhaps they were overfueling)

Maybe this is why Safari push the Intercooler option on the 100 series.

This is why also I will be sticking with BP Diesel untill 2006 as they are the only ones that have the most extensive <50ppm Sulphur fuel rolled out accross the country at present.

Hope this helps you Browny

Cheers

Bruce

Thanks Harrow,
Verry Informative, great stuff, as with most aftermarket stuff the recomendations go hand in hand with what each fitter does or doesn't stock, but I reckon a moderately boosted intercooled Turbo is probably a good set up, along with a modified exhaust.................eventaually...;-)

Hi Harrow,

Another source of excellent information on EGT and other related diesel topics is the Banks site in the US, including this one:

And, if I may be permitted a brief personal plug, I think I make a pretty good EGT guage myself. Please check out my listing in the ExplorOz Business Search (search on "egt") or lave a look at my site:

Hi Ian

Sorry I missed your product, you do not appear to be visible to google or dogpile search engines.
I did an extensive search for digital EGT/Pyrometers locally first and drew a blank.

Re your PDF article it is the clearest ,most concise and accurate Ive seen to date well done, but get it out there Ive heard some BS researching this.

Alice damm, to quote Blazing Saddles I was born there raised there and God Dam wasnt going to die there, though I do miss the center's bush, sister still lives there.

Ill send you the details on the EGT/Boost guage Ive ordered when it arrives , so you know what your up against and do better.

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

My site has only been 'live' since June and it takes a while for Google etc. to find you (or so I'm told). Strangely enough I found myself on Google last week but the next day I wasn't there - thankfully I know more about instruments than I do about the workings of web links and search engines...

Thanks for the comments about my info - like you, I spent a lot of time researching this topic before deciding I could put something together myself which is as good, if not better, than the usual American analog gauge reading in degrees F. That said, the Hoyt looks to be one of the better offerings out there.

Regarding Alice, great place but we were just blow-ins. Yes, we lived there for over a year and Thermoguard was launched there but we are now unapologetic indefinite travellers and for the next few months will be based in Brisbane. After that, who knows - the Kimberleys look good. But The Alice and the Centre is magic country and I'm sure well be back again and again.

Be pleased to hear how you Hoyt gauge goes (and how much it costs, in A$, if I may ask?)
