I have a 2000 TJ Wrangler which has done about 64,000km. It has developed an oil leak at the rear of the engine and Bell housing. I am presuming it is the rear engine seal. Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, what is involved for the home mechanic to replace the seal to fix the leak?

Unless you enjoy tight and heavy dismantling (removal of gearbox) I would geta local workshop to do it. The seal itself is not hard to replace but it has to go in flat so not to loose its shape. Then you have to put the box back in and thats not a light job.
Probably a full days work if your at home. I would clean and dry any oil i find too. And remember not to leave the gearbox hanging on its shaft or you will be up for a huge damage bill.
Pay someone and get it done properly.
Just my opinion.

Had it done in my Rodeo twice. Second time was not long after the first so it was a warranty job. Did the clutch while they were at it. Was done at 98k.
Stuff removing a 4WD gearbox and transfer case yourself IMHO.

G'day Jason,
Have a good look and make sure the oil is not coming from futher up e.g
the rocker cover gasket or even a sump gasket.
If in doubt give the engine a good degrease from underneath and recheck
in a week or two.
If it is a rear seal then yes it is a fair job without a full workshop.
I'd set aside a full week-end to do it on the ground.

Hi Jason, what about giving the mechanic in a can/tube a go. By that I mean the
oil additive that softens the oil seals.
I have used it twice in my Triton to reduce
the drip, not stopped it completely but doesnt seem to affect oil level in 5000kms.
It would be interesting to know the record for the number of times a gearbox/tfer case has had to be removed for bearinds, clutch/oil leaks etc.
There must be a better way!
I am leaving
mine until the greabox needs major attention when the seals & probably clutch shall be done.
