Hi all,
Has anyone had any trouble with 75 series or any other landcruisers breaking rear axle studs. I have had the privilage of having to replace studs three times on one particular vehicle and just recently heard of a couple more to have the same problem. My thought on this problem is that it is from hitting the outer edge of the axle to remove the collets and squashing the once round stud holes into an oblong shaped hole, then when tightening the studs, putting to much tension on the studs as the holes pull back into shape or the studs coming loose as the hole reshapes itself back to round under normal driving.
Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Oh what a feeling, again! Was it the wheel mounting studs or the studs which hold the floating axle??
Have heard there is a mod for the axle studs, ie: replace the 10mm studs with 12mm I think!.
Sons is an apprentice light comm vehicle tech & he tells me that they see a few
4wds come in with broken wheels studs, sometimes multiple breaks on the one wheel!

Most breakages occur after the bolts have been undone, and done up, or come loose.

When ever you have a rear axle out, you should replace the studs, like conrod bolts or head studs, they work on the stretch of the bolt to hold tension.

The dowells should also be properly installed.

Once the axle studs have broken once, from coming loose, or losing tension, then the collet holes become oval, and the threaded holes in the hub, and they will keep breaking.

You can re drill the hub, and re tap, but need to replace the axle if the holes are oversize or oval, to prevent it continuing.

You could machine the taper to suit 100 series larger axle bolts, but I havent looked at this, to make sure it would work as yet, as using new studs has always meant I havent broken them off on my trucks.

It is more prevalent if the vehicle has larger than normal tyres and/or a detroit type locker, both increase the shock loads on the studs.

Only had one broken so far, and I did that after a wheel nut seized on it. Bought the replacement off the rack in AutoPro.

I work in the mining industry and we break them quite regularly on the rear. 90% of the time this is due to overloading and then driving them hard. Can also be because the bearings are clapped out and allowing to much play in the axle and hence loading up the studs. Very easy job to fix though as you've would have already found out (if you have the parts - even if you don't just pull the axle out, cover the opening with tape/plastic and put it in 4x4 to get ya home). If it continues to happen regulary then you could either have a bent axle housing or axle shaft - and it aint got to be bent much to cause problems (ie less than you'll ever see by eye)

Cheers,
Hughesy

Had three axle studs broken when ARB fitted my diff locks, all on same axle and on 1996 80 series.

Told that it is a common thing for them to snap.
