Hi Bob,
Get a cheap CDMA phone on Ebay (Nokia 2280 with external antenna) with a USB data connector to get the best coverage available. Purchase prepaid Internet dial-up access, 100 hours for $100 with 12 months to use the hours, pay by the second of use (bytesite@bytesite.com.au). Single dialup number from anywhere in Australia. No minimum use per month.
With the later CDMAx1 (newer digital version) you can get a good data connection around the east coast cities but it wont be available all around Australia.
So wherever you can get CDMA you can get your email diect to your laptop and when not, available through Webmail at an Internet cafe.
Hope that assists.
Regards
Ian

Nokia are crap CDMA phones with heaps of problems my dad owns a mobile phone
shop
you can get a brand new Hyundai TX60B on Telstra included on the $20 a month plan and that gives you a free hour of phone calls a day during an hour of your choice
you can phone up ISP or any other phone fixed or mobile and talk for 20 minutes
as long as you start call before the hour you can go past the hour with your 20 minutes
there are ISP as low as $5.95 month
CDMA1X is bloody expensive and you pay for data and need a plan
I wish people here would rather give no advice rather than bad advice

WOW, that's a bit rough isn't it?
I think most people on this
forum post what they have experienced and what they know. Nobody pretends that it MUST be done this or that way. Then from a wide number of responses the
peron who asked the question can make their own choice.
So here's some GOOD advice.
You've got two ears and one mouth. Use them in that proportion.
R.

Well my Daddy has a 6385 Nokia CDMA and never had any trouble with it. If a phone survives my Dad then it is a bloody good phone. His has pieces out of the case from being dropped on concrete. Gets used in corrosive environments.
I've had Ericssons that haven't survived normal use. Then again one of my best phones was also an Ericsson. However for ease of use you can't beat a Nokia.

Hi Ian (QLD),
I also have a Nokia 2280 with data cable and want to hook it up to my laptop for internet use. I have found the .inf modem driver file on the Nokia site, but can't figure out how to install it. How did you go about it? Also what type of external aerial should I be looking at? Thanks in advance..

Hi Syncro,
Place the driver files in a folder \modem. XP should detect it and direct it where to find the driver. In Win98 go control panel and check if it is found but has a yellow marker against it. Reinstall the driver through properties. If not detected at all install though add hardware in control panel.
The nokia site is:
http://www.nokia.com.au/nokia/0,,42253,00.html
Not sure with external aerial. I was out at the
Roma stock sales a month ago and there was a variety of broomstick and windscreen external aerials for CDMA.
Hope this assists.

PS I thought with REPCO it was a case of rent a teenager while they know everything.

Thanks Ian, I'll give it a go.
Not only are teenagers a wealth of knowledge, they also generally drive a lot better (and quicker) than most. I was that teenager once... LOL

Bob,
Despite what REPCO says I have had a Telstra supplied Nokia 6385 CDMA x1 phone for over a year.
Used it last year with my laptop to send and receive emails on a daily basis on an 8 week trip. Juts dialed into my ISP in
Brisbane and used the free for first 5 minutes option that is available on my plan.
Emails cost me almost zilch for the 8 weeks.
Only place where there was no coverage was the Nullarbor. The trip was all on road and we went only as far north in WA as
Geraldton.
I used the data function occasionally to check on weather conditions.
Not one problem with the Nokia.
So, as you can see, my advice is based on personal experience.
Cheers
Magnus

I have a Hyundai CDMA phone - it is utter crap - poor battery life, very poor audio, inflexible to set up, counterintuitive to use unreliable, cannot hook in an external antenna, cannot purchase a bigger battery for it...
I cannot wait until I'm "out of contract" with it - I'll replace it straight away.
Good cheer.
