I have a TD LC (IFS) can I fit 285x75 16R tires to it without any modification to inside the wheel arch or OE suspension?

Yes.

I have a 2003 100TD and run a second set of rims (original steel ones) with 285x75 R16 Goodyear Wrangler MTR's.

No suspension modifications (yet). No scraping or touching (that I am aware of).

Thanks Steve/Kirstie, I spoke to a Cooper dealer who advised not to fit the 285x75 R16's, because of the scraping/touching,

Pem,

As it turns out I was looking at a 4.2 TD GXL LC (IFS) today in carpark at Bunnings with Cooper ST 285/75R16s. Owner rolled up so I had a chat about how he found the Cooper STs (I have ATs). He was really happy. Goes off road a fair bit and I asked about tyres rubbing, etc. He said he hadn't experienced a problem.

Pem

I too have an 04 TD GXL on which I run a second set of 285 75 BFG AT's on the stock steel rims and have no problems with them fitting. The spare will also still fit underneath (not ideal for off road though), although I carry my 2nd spare on a rear wheel carrier.

PEM, not all tyres (of the same nominal size) are created equal.

A 285/75/16 may be anything from 821 mm to 847 mm in diameter. The nominal size is 844 mm and the Copper STT is 842 mm.

Add to that the effect of side lug size and shape, which can also vary considerably between makes/designs, and effect actual width and ...

... while some 285/75/16 may fit without problems, others may not.

Besides, looking at the Toyota specs, depending on your choice of 285/75/16, it may well be illegal too. What's the largest wheel/tyre combo indicated on the tyre placard?

I run 285/75/16's on mine but do have suspension modified - plenty of room.
