The Australian National 4WD Radio Network (VKS 737) have just published a Press Release on the ExplorOz Press Release system that will be of interest to all HF radio users.

See Press Release page

In summary, the introduction of Broadband Powerline Communications in Australia is expected to cause interferance and degredation to HF radio services and VKS737 are under threat.

The press release contains more information on the issue and a request for the public to express concern to the politicians.

Michelle & David,
Don't like to be negative about this but what can you do? Tell a politician, might as go and whistle dixie. There is no way VKS737 is going to become an "issue" despite the fact that lives may depend on it. Far more people would get upset if you threatened Broadband I'm sure. Even if the Pollie said he would do something, do you reckon? Frustration rules, seeing JH being driven to parliment house yesterday in his nice limo I don't think so.

I firmly disagree with being negative. If this "issue" is not brought to light then you will get no where anyway. There is an election coming up in 6 weeks time so this is the best time to lodge a protest on this subject. We live in a democratic country so if people just go & stick their heads in the sand & not be heard the Power Corporations will get what they want without resistance & all that money spent in purchasing H.F communication equipment will just go to waste. Any item that will save the Government money (such as apposing this proposed change to H.F. Comms legislation) is a good issue to argue on. Now that I've said my piece I'll leave it to others to comment. Cheers.

Topcat,
I'm alongside some of what Floyd says, don't worry I will have my vote and I agree with what you say, you might well lodge a protest and I for one would support the protest, revenue does come into it as mentioned, apart from the 10% you pay GST the govenment would see very little from HF, I doubt if half the Pollies would know what HF was, sure they would know what the RFDS is and yes that would be a very "lively" issue I'm sure, the curtains fading and carpets getting wrecked by them being subjected to the extra hour of sunlight (huh) we get here in WA was also quite a contentious issue, hence no daylight saving.
I'm not very good a political debate, I don't trust any of them, I haven't got my head in the sand either I would like to think, even if they, whoever they are win and promise to do what they say they would do how often do they do it? Except if there is an election coming up when they then come good on some of the old policies.
Nuff said I'm going back to 3.0 litre TD motor problems, Toyota diff problems, which battery to use, muddies or A/T's and is Well 33 accesible on the CSR.
Over to you TC............

Much of the info in the press release is factless, exaggerated and stupid hysteria by the person(s) who wrote it. The answer will be that Politicians will support the Power cable option and everyone will buy sat phones. They are about 1/3rd of the cost of the latest Codan. The governemt may even subsidise the purchase of sat phones as they did with Satelite dishes in the bush. Amateur radio has a heap of other bands and frequencies. These days antennas are getting better, radios are more efficient and the ones effected by the HF interferance will just move to clearer frequencies. We will travel with sat phones and the Government will get more revenue as they still own 51 % of Telstra. Wy would any business focussed government support a few whinging HF radio operators (me being one of them)with almost obscelete equipment that they cannot get any revenue from. Call me a synic but this is the way of the world. HF will go as the new technology arrives. The government saw this in the 70's with greater interfearence on HF CB caused by the noise emittting technologies in powered products and the sunspot activity. the result was that they let 477meg UHF loose on the world to keep the good buddy CBers happy. HF has no future in Australia.
