Hi everybody, just found this forum... fantastic :-)
I have been thinking for a while now what to do with my tired 2H motor in my trayback. Some people say put a more modern motor in from the japanese importers and others recomend to rebuild what I got.
My trayback is a 81 model and has done about 800,000km. Not much rust and I love the car. Has anybody gone trough this? would love to hear what other epeople think.
Thank you
Regards

You will probably find it better to rebuild the original engine. My experience is that if you match newer machinery with old technology you are bound to have unwanted problems and headaches.

I have recently updated my truck to a later model. I loved my old '78 Nissan G60 but the cost of refurbishing it wasn't warranted and I had to let her go. The motor was good(petrol) and I had rebuilt that three years ago but the body and mechanicals were starting to show wear and tear. It had done 460,000km. Now it has retired to a station where is will be put to work as a backup vehicle.

I recently put a new head and sideplate on my 2h and waterpump and it cost over 2 1/2k in parts alone so I shudder to think what a proper rebuild would be worth. I guess price it out and figure what else you could buy for the money and work out if you would be in front. If you could get a firm quote for fitting a jap import motor you would know where you stand otherwise as per willems comment

G'day Rhino,
I can sympathise mate. I, too, have an HJ47 ('84) that I find hard to part with.
Mine's done 683,000kms on the original motor and my suggestion would be - providing you're happy with the 2H - to source another motor.

If you look around there are plenty of options and the cost is not that bad, especially when you consider the potential longevity (of the motor).

The main reason I like mine is that its just a big mechano set and bloody hard to kill. Yes, it's a work vehicle and is used around the suburbs as well as the occasional bush camping trip.

Stay with it as the modern ones don't last as long - I know this from personal experience.

Cheers.....

Gidday,If you know someone that has fitted a grey import motor get their findings about it first. The Japanese are not too particular about servicing as they have to replace their vehicles regularly (something about regulations I think) and it was a matter start them and go like a bat out of hell.No warming up no nothing. When you do yours up you know what you have under the lid.
Just my bit

Have your old one rebuilt as it is an early model 2H it will more than likely have sleeves and $4 big ones should get it done.
I had my 2h 89 cruiser done 2 years ago and it cost a little over $3 big ones plus R&R and it is reliable and honest.
They are all a little under powered so put a turbo on , but keep pressure down around 7 and you wil have no trouble and the old girl will do another 1/2 million.
