Hi all, I am considering putting a new donk and gearbox in my 80 series. Currently the 1HZ had done 190kms and is very sluggish - always has been. The gearbox whynes like a banshee so I am thinking about replacing them both with a factory turbo motor. Any ideas where I can get hold of one in Qld? And what sort of $$ would I expect to pay and what could I sell mine for? How easy is the conversion and would I need a starter, clutch etc from the turbo motor

If I remember Toyota were selling them as 'crate' motors a while back, might be worth checking into.. The prices from what Yota people were sayin was VERY cheap for a new TD.

Failing that, try wreckers, but I would think the price would be high, as it would be asort after motor...

190,000 is barely run in for a diesel if treated well... with some going 600,000

Toyota currently have a special price program running but the turbo engines are not on the program. The 1HZ is though and he could get a brand new one for around $7,500 which is a couple of K off new price.

The engines are head to sump no exteranl hang on bits though.

Justin a replacement motor was priced for me yesterday in Brisbane for my 1hd-t at $5500. I believe this is without turbo and the gearbox would be at least 3000?

Hi Justin,
Lane Toyota in Melbourne are advertizing in the TLCA club magazine "No Interest" new replacement engines - a "suit 80 L/Cruser" is advertized at $191.44 per week for 52 weeks at no interest ($9955 total) - I think this is a diesel - no sure if it is a long or short motor (all accessories or just bare) and most likely not a Turbo.

Give them a call and see if they can do what you require and if the Qld. Toyota delaers are doing similar.

Why not rebuild your box, and then turbo IC the 1HZ??

Dazza will let me know but is it the 1HZ that doesnt like turboing?
It will probably cost you $8-10k for the conversion to the turbo donk and box...
Where as gearbox and turbo wont be 1/2 that.

5-6k should get you a good 1hdft, and Brisbane Engine Imports should ahve somne low km Japanese units, they eve have had some 1hdfte's of late.

The 1hdft is almost bolt in with a H150 gearbox, which runs better ratio's, and better low range as well as being a better box.

hzj_105 on 4wdm forum, who is also on www.lcool.org on the 80 and 100 email lists has done a 1hdft conversion on his 105 series 100, and could give you some good info on the swap.

And IMHO the 1hz is a cheap diesel engine, which is fragile, inefficient, and sluggish.

the model of gearebox you have will be marked on the Vin plate under the bonnet.

Will most likely be the H55 carry over from the 60/75 if its a hj or fj 80, with the td 80/78/9 h150 h151 being the choice box of the lot.

Re 1hz motor

Fragile how do you figure that, if service correctly they will give you many miles of troble free motoring. 300,000plus

Sluggish yes

Inefficient 10.6 - 11.2 l/100km

please explain you comments as i would consider them a little misleading

Justin,

before you go the new motor route, how about giving C.E.M. a trial. they claim to clean out the internals and to be producing near new power providing all mechanicals are ok. i know, i know, some are very sceptical of these claims but my old boss tried the treatment before he replaced the motor in his truck(425hp series60 detroit) he was so impressed he sold his mates on useing it. as 4 the 1hz being sluggish??? compared to what. min is naturally aspirated and kept up easily with a 3ltr turbo patrol. admittly, when towing my van it is slow on some hills but, hey, im a pensioner and not in that much of a hurry. hope this helps

regards

Bob

Have a look at Brunswick Diesals WA where I got a quote recently for my Patrol a refurb V8 chev and HD gear box & HD clutch for $16,500 incl GST.
Really worth considering when the donk eventually dies.
