Bash plates

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a good place to have some bash plates made up on Brisbanes southside? Something that just attaches to existing holes.

I was thinking of some folded aluminium or steel or whatever mainly to preotect the bottom of the engine. The sump is well up out of the way but I always worry about something flicking up there and damaging it.

Thanks.

Don't know of anyone in particular. I was thinking along the same lines but it was suggested to me they may interfere with airflow for cooling. Depends upon the particular vehicle I guess. I've seen them on quite a few vehicles as mods and of course most IFS models have them as standard.

The old Hilux IFS has a bash plate that has vents in it like the back of a caravan fridge. I might be able to modify a Hilux or another makes bash plate?

G'day Utemad,
I don't wish to "rain on your parade" or anything, but just a couple of points to consider... My experience with bash-plates has been that if you are going off the beaten track (seldom-used, partly overgrown tracks, etc.), they (bash-plates) offer a perfect place for grass (spinifex) & twigs to accumulate, thus greatly increasing the risk of fire...
I've been caught out precisely this way myself..(transmission bash-plate on GQ).. Luckily, window down at the time, smelt smoke (just smouldering at this stage), and was able to get the crap out of there before it went up in flames...
Needless to say, after that episode, the bash-plates came off!! (Still need to check under there frequently, as there's still plenty of other places for such crap to accumulate!)
Also, if you drive through some sticky mud, & it gets between the bash-plate & the sump (which it will!!), and allowed to dry hard, then there's another potential problem in the making!!
Different matter, of course, if you're into rock-hopping, need all the protection you can get, I guess...

Of course, if said plates are designed to allow the easy expulsion of such junk, then there should be no problems...

That is a good point. It might be a good idea to have them reasonably easy to remove (although would need to be for servicing anyway). That way I could put them on when need be and leave them home when not needed.

I think the GU ute got recalled to have a bash plate removed because it was causing fires from built up grass seed.

we use bash plates for the work vehicles to protect the steering assemblys at the front of the 78s and they are essential for bush bashing as many stumps cannot be seen in dense regrowth after fires . This is pretty extreme use though not recomended for anything other than work vehickles

Utemad, try Aspinall Trailers in Coopers Plains. They made the one for my Pajero for a reasonable price.

I think you are wasting your time with aluminium unless it's particulary thick but then you will have a weight prob. I would be more worried about sticks piercing cv boots or if it's a v6 you got, strengthening the bash plate for the exhaust.
