Hi all,

anyone else have this problem or just me?
after starting the car and 4by the oil light stays on for about 30 to 60 seconds. obviously the oil has drained back out of the filter o/nite. this cannot be doing either veh any good. have tried many different brand filters inc genuine(exp) repco reyco puralotar(supposed to be ubeut from usa) and sakura(also supposed to be good). have checked, flushed, and made sure that the relief valve is free and not sticking. h e l p any thoughts appreciated as dont want to prematurely wear out the motors (esp on 4by)

regards

Bob

What car and what engine?

Have you checked the oil pressure light itself?

2.0 litre camry this is normal as it is for most vehicles left o night for the oil to drain out. If you believe the blurb products like slick 50 protect motors on startup until the oil reaches the top of the motor. on cold mornings I usually have to start my 2h motor twice as it turns itself off if oil pressure is not reached in about 10 sec

Hi Davoe,

it may well be normal for cars and 4bys to be like this, but going on my memory (which aint all that reliable) it wasnt always like this. it does seem like a terrible amount of damage could/is being done on startup. is this a plot by the filter manufs in agreement with veh manufs to cause motors to wear out quickly and so the consumer (us) has to pay for repairs more often??

thanks

Bob,

I'll admit that I know stuff all about how this all works.

The only thing I can add is that my Patrol's light only stays on for about 15 seconds, and that used to worry me a bit too. Since fitting the Oil Pressure gauge, I now have a slightly better understanding of what is happening.

IMHO, it doesn't have anything to do with your choice of oil filter/s. The light is only their to indicate that a low pressure exists in your oil galleries. In my case the oil gauge (the sender unit is in a different location to the factory-fitted switch which controls the red idiot light), starts to move off zero about the same time the red light goes off. This indicates to me that my red idiot light must be set at a very low pressure....as soon as the pressure builds up to about 3 psi, the light goes off. Now, in your case the factory oil pressure switch might be set higher (or could be faulty).
If it was my vehicle, I would be fitting a separate oil pressure gauge so you could check what pressure is in the motor. It has certainly allayed my concerns. However, now that I've done it, I do notice that there is very little pressure at idle speeds once the motor is hot. In fact the gauge barely registers; maybe about 5psi.

I've always been a great believer in Slick 50 and have treated my current vehicle twice (10,000klm and 90,000klm). The testimonials from satisfied customers was convinced me. One was a trucking company from Brisbane. A Kenworth had had a major breakdown in the Adelaide Hills....a fan had cut out and the motor was overheating, but the driver couldn't stop where he was, so he had to keep driving it to the top. The motor had done over 1.2 million klicks and they pulled it down to see what damage the overheating had caused.....The testimonial went on to state that the cross hatching which is on the top of the pistons when new, but apparently wears off after a few hundread thousand klicks normally, was stiil in tact and the motor looked like it'd only done a few hundred thousand....
It's probably all BS, but it convinced me to give it a go. It's a bit like the Shu Roo I haveand the Counter-Act (electric rust prevention) etc......you don't really know they ARE working unless they fail.

Hope this helps.....Just my opinions

Day Roachie,

I wouldnt be worried too much i suppose except that when i bought the veh it didnt do this. start up and the light would go out. after an oil change and filter (always change filter with oil) this didnt happen. unfourtantly i dont have the old filter to get the same one. couldnt get it here. i think it was a fleetgaurd or something like that(lucas maybe). might have to investigate the availability of these. i also used to like slick 50 but as you say, you dont know if its working until something doesnt. i do know that years ago i had to use FORTE / FORTRON additives due to extra warrantie. had bottom radiator hose blow off (not tightened by mechanic) 20ks out of town. thought what the heck... drove to town, let motor cool for 1/2 hr and filled up with water. no damage except bent temp gauge needle. this was in holde 202 motor. so maybe additives do work.

thanks

I was using Valvoline filters for a short while.... took 10 to 15 seconds or more seconds for pressure to come up.
Now back to Ryco- much quicker to get oil pressure. (Nissan TD42)

The ideal would be to have an electric oil pump which gets pressure up before start.
