Hi,
I ended up buying the kit for the exta glove box that fits were the air bag isn't. Pretty dear for what you get but your really paying for the knowledge. Very easy to fit, looks great and almost doubles the area to put junk in.
If anyone wants the template used to cut out the plastic blank behind the front panel let me know I can send it off. That's the hardest, knowing were to cut the plastic, you only get one go. After that you could just follow the web instructions and buy your own, piano hinge, rivits, screws, ply and liner.
Though for the $80 I thought it was worth it to save me trying to measure and cut out the timber base plate and liner.

Hi,
So far my lid hasn't been dropping down, but it's only been in for a week or so. If it starts being a dramas I was going to fit a magnetic closer/lock like in kitchen cupboards.

Made my own w/- light gauge sheet metal & pop rivets... lined w/- that sticky-back felt you can get from craft shops... at least double the capacity of the "bought" one (deeper & wider), & works just fine for me... Piano hinge on lid, & sticky-back velcro 'round the edge of lid (& opening) keeps it from popping open (most of the time)...

Now your making me feel guilty. Tossed up whether to do this or not as I have the means to do so but......... When I cut the front panel out I realised you could make it much larger but it sits around the corner. Aaah
well, next time.

Ed,
How'd you go cutting the hole? Just go in the middle and keep working out or is there an easier way?

G'day Andrew,
I used a jigsaw.. It's a while since I did it, but I don't recall any difficulty.. just drill a hole close to each corner big enough to take the jigsaw blade, & join 'em up!.. You can smooth off the cut edge with a coarse file (or woodrasp)...
When I did it, I cut (& folded) templates from thin cardboard (brekky cereal box type cardboard), & once I was satisfied with the fit, marked & cut out the sheetmetal, folded as per templates, & assembled the the whole thing "in situ"... (wouldn't have fit thru the opening nor from underneath in 1 piece)... Lined the box w/- felt as mentioned, re-fit lid using aforementioned piano hinge, &
Viola!! .. "Better than a bought one!" .. (
well, I think so, anyway)..

I didnt bother with hinges on
mine just used a couple of strips of velro with a little tag that hangs out to pull it of with . Keep the radios behind it so l remove the lid and leave it at home so it dosnt get in the way of the passangers legs when we go out 4wding.
Andy.

Austravel would love to see how this works - any chance of a photo? My email is macandjen23@bigpondDOTcom. I take it with the template and the correct cutting you can make your own fairly easily? Do you make the lid out of what you cut off the dash?

This site tells all. Thought about doing the same as previous guy with sheet metal but with so many things to do I decided to buy it. However it true if you want to have a go yourself you can make it much larger in capacity.

I thought there was a 40mm tubular bar a few inches behind the dash in that area...

What a fantastic idea. Hadn't heard about these before so thanks for the post. We never seem to have enough glove box space so we'll definitely be getting one of these. For the relatively small cost of $77, I think we'll just go with the aftermarket one. Recently built an overhead console by copying one of the aftermarket ones and it turned out to be a huge job.
