I am interested in opinions on McGowan Island and Honeymoon bay campsites. Which is more suitable for young families and having no problems with leaving gear unattened while out sightseeing. Any info on alcohol bans in western Aust would also be appreciated.

Brad,

In my opinion McGowan is the better of the two for what you're after. In saying that I always stay at Honeymoon Bay because of the fishing and have never had any problems with leaving gear unattended. As far as Alcohol bans are concerned I can't help you with the facts but from experience there doesn't seem to be too many in this area. Just be discreet.

I agree,

We took lots of alcohol but of course were discrete. Honeymoon bay is very good.
We were there August 2003 and they had good amenities. Only two complaints were that there is limited mains power if you need it. Their idea of power lines is 3-phase electrical wire strung across the trees and the fact the toilet/shower block are unisex.

If you don't like the communal area you can travel in an easterly direction along the beach until you hit the mangroves at the point. There are heaps of more private self-sufficient campsites there.

It's probably safe to say that you must at least be keen on fishing and the rest of the family to stay there. They charge like a wounded bull.

Fee to get on Kalumburu reserve plus nightly camping fees is a fair bit. You can get on a charter 'dinghy' out for some good fishing at about $75 per person for 4 hours. Not cheap but if you're lucky you'll get more fish than $75 worth.

The main thing I was surprised about is that the owner of the area was supposedly given an $80,000 govt grant to run the tourist area and has very little to show for it.

The beauty of the area outweighs this though.

Brad,
I was at Kaiumburu in August this year and Honeymoon Bay was a rubbish pit. The cost of the permit to enter has increased to $35. The bakery has closed and the Church and museum are no longer open to the public. I think there is another fee to stay at Honeymoon Bay. As far as I know it is a dry community.

Thats real sad about the Bakery, as it was the best tasting bread anywhere in Aus. The old nuns were getting a bit long in the tooth though.

As for Honeymoon I think the setup money has gone on gambleing and a bit of weed. It was good when it first opened, in 94 it was clean and peacefull.

I guess this is another sad case of the locals being self governing.

A number of years ago, we went up to the old Pago Mission ruins before intending to check into the caravan park. Being deslexic, I took the wrong road and found myself heading northwards over a small creek and then in my pannic, turned left down this track which ended up at this fabulous beach. Not wanting to panic any further it took me a couple of days to regroup myself and eventually found the way out. Had to survive on these really huge oystersthat we broke off the rocks. Geez it was a tough couple of days.

alcohol is not permitted but if you exercise discretion then you will get away with it. Don't get caught and definitely don't have alcohol within Kalumburu townsite.
McGowans (I heard) is now closed

G'day There
I was there quite recently and have to agree with some earlier comments - Honeymoon was pretty horrendous - especially considering the fees you have to pay. $35 to visit the community - then extra fees to camp at Honeymoon.

The amenities were filthy, with one shower recess totally blocked and flooding - the whole place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years!

Having said that - the fishing was average without a boat, but the oysters right off the rocks were fantastic.

We stayed one night only and were happy to leave - despite it's scenic beauty.

In the Kimberly - there are so many beautiful spots - you don't need to camp in such considitions... We didn't visit McGowans so can't comment.

The community is Dry.

Cheers
