Dear All
Thinking about buying a 1999 Pajero 3.5 auto wondered if they were any good towing a 18 feet caravan?!
Enough power etc
thanks

Should have no problems doing that.

A friend has one and tows an offroad 14ft van. Obviously a little shorter , but being offroad, would probably be around a similar weight.

You need torque at low revs, not power... diesels are the best for that.

The size of the van isn't the issue it's the weight. You might not exceed the manufacturer's towing mass for the vehicle but you won't be going too fast either.

Petrol engines don't reach max torque or power until around 3000 - 4500 rpm. You will rarely do those revs unless you are caning the car. Diesels get their max torque and power, especially turbos at much lower revs, around 2000 - 2500 rpm.

I tow a 16ft van with a Prado TD, but wouldn't consider a bigger van without a larger diesel turbo donk.

No problems mate. The '99 3.5 twin cam has heaps of grunt for towing, especially when coupled with the auto.

I've got a 1999 GLS auto 117,000 on the clock towing 17'6 1500kg van.

Fuel consumption.

15l/100 city
11l/100 highway
19l/100 towing van

Keeps up with traffice easily and over takes without hesitation.

Power plenty for Van, overtook on highway out side Port Lincoln and was surprised at speedo indicating 140 and hadn't really planted foot down.

Love the cruise control but on advice take it out of overdrive to tow.

Vehicle is roomy and comfortable and tows nicely. do not regret buying it last October for $30k less trade-ins.

No problems except for funny handbarake/master cylinder warning light when its cold.

Regards

Russell
