Running Copper A/T 265/75/r16 on my GU patrol and I need new tyres. I am going up to the Kimberleys in WA for about 2 years. I was thinking of changing to BFG 285/75/r16. I have read all the thoughts posted at this site but was wondering if any one had any problems with these tyres up north. I use the standard steel 8in rim from Nissan.

Hi Bill, I use the BFG's on my Nissan GQ, and love 'em, did a trip through the Kimberleys and GRR while back (in 2002) where they are popular and recommended by most locals including tyre dealer at Kununurra, didn't have a puncture on them however the other vehicle tyres (kumho) did have one puncture out on the Mornington, but you could shave with that rock anyway...

Is that size a common size up there? if you need a replacement that could be a costly exericse.

285's are not as common as the 33's. In my case of running 285/75/16 MTR's, I have 5 and am in the process of getting another 3. I will run them on my HD Trailer whilst in QLD, but when on a trip will keep one on the door of the truck and 2 on the roof of the camper. The rubber is on alloys so the weight does not affect towing ability etc.

In the alternative, you may have a kaymar wheel carrier and only need 1 on the trailer etc.

In my own opinion, carry a repair kit and 3 spares, you could have a really bad day and do 2, not that I think you would with MTR's at the right pressure and driven at the right speed. Again, Murphy's Law!

Cheers

Chris.

Good advice that.

I have heard some real nightmare storys from a mate with 35 MT's on his GU Ute. He paid over $400 for 1 tire, cause he had no choice!

Going up the Kimberleys myself, and my tyre dealer, recommend BFG 265/75/R16.
They are more commun, was quoted $235.00 each. Armadale Tyre Centre
Will fit the same rims and tyres on my camper.
