I am considering buying an 80 series that has had a Chev 6.5l Diesel conversion and am wondering about the fuel consumption on a a long trip compared to the standard 4.2 l motor. Any help would be appreciated.

Valdon,

Fuel consumption usually is not a great problem, because the motor is hardly ever working. However, check on insurance. Several people on various forums, along with a member of our 4wd club have had great problems finding a compant that will touch them. Even the National 4wd insurance (TCIS) will no longer insure them.

Fuel consumption I am led to believe actually gets better. My brother has similar conversion in 60 series and has no drama's whatsoever. I have been investigating the conversion myself and I think you will find as advised above that you will need to dig around for someone who will cover you. Look back a week or so on the forum for a question I posed and you'll find some good answers (as always). I reckon it would still be worth buying - someone will cover you.

Working in the Caravan industry a few years ago, had a chance to chat with a guy who had had this conversion done in his 60 series. Towing a big 30 foot caravan across the nulabor with his son behind him in a standard engined Cruiser with similar sized van, fuel consunption was recorded for future reference by both drivers. On coming back the V8 Diesel hardly changed. But he was surprised to find his sons fuel consumption nearly doubled. He pondered why to his son who replied, "Didn't you notice the 50kph head wind we were driving into?!"
