Could anyone tell me where the main dirt road in the Thirlmere lakes brings you out please. Also, is there anywhere to
camp around that area

I think it is the back way to Yerranderie. Have to be friends with the
Water Board to use it though.....
Don't know about
camping spots now - 5+ years ago there was a good spot to the South of the
gate - about 100 meters into the bush. We could get 10 tents in the quite comfortably.

Brad, Live around there. You won't get passed the gates southern track. It will eventually bring you to Yerrandarie. Phone national parks in Picton to check
camping etc they check the area. new ammenaties are very good.

According to my topo map, you won't get more than a few kms along any of the tracks radiating out of Thirlmere Lakes before you hit a series of locked gates. So I guess the answer to you your question is "Thirlmere". :(
However, if you head across to
Buxton, there appears to be a number of 4x4 tracks just a few kms south, on the western side of the main road. By the looks of it, you could even take the Fire Road No P1 from the eastern side of the main road that follows the Bargo River in a north-east back to Tahmoor.

You are right, there is now a huge dropper across the road before the 1st
gate. There are tracks near
Buxton that are gated off Bargo State entrance. Watch for the two wheelers if you come down on the weekend
