FYI from LCOOL list, which confirms my findings also between brands, as the top 4-5 tyre brands are not all the same, though some are certainly better marketed than others, but who buys a tyre on warranty anyway... ;-)

Also, getting same reports as MTR with new good year ATR all terrain tyre as well.

Subject: Goodyear MTRs Vs Cooper STTs

Just to follow on from all the hype regarding the MTRs recently.
I did a trip from Karratha to Darwin and back with a few dirt tracks such as
Cape Leveque, Bungle Bungles etc in my 78 series Troopie towing a camper
trailer--I had a new set of Cooper STTs fitted to replace the Cooper STs that
were splitting in the carcass after only 5000 Ks.
I did 8700Ks round trip.
My mate Kevin did the same trip also towing a camper trailer but with heaps more
load in his 78 series Troopie--he had two 200litre drums of diesel in the back
as well as a fridge and a huge tool box --far more heavily laden than mine so he
expected a lot of wear but he had a new set of MTRs fitted --he chose those when
he saw what my Coopers looked like after the trip !
My Coopers wore 4.7mm where his MTRs wore 1.85mm--check the photos attached --ok
he did only 8100Ks compared to my 8700Ks --negligable difference really but
there is no comparison on the tyres --the MTRs were far better on
mileage--Identical trips in the same vehicles-neither of us travelled more than
100kph [ the legal maximum in WA when towing trailers]-and he carried far more
weight !
Dont forget there is no mileage warranty on Cooper STTs [at least not here with
Karratha Tyrepower]
The MTRs are looking very attractive for my next set of tyres
Do you think I will ever buy Coopers again ? Twice bitten --twice shy !
Duncan-78 series troopie + Ultimate camper + Coopers all round [not for long!]

Very interesting observations there Duncan.
I bought my STs about 4 months ago and have done 17,000klm on them so far. Apart from a cut down one side of one of them last weekend, I have had no trouble. The cut was probably my own fault for being "easily led" in a convoy. We were at the SA's EO Teddy Bears Picnic and did a short drive on Sunday morning over some rocky terrain. I asked others over the uhf whether they were gunna air-down, but nobody thought it would be necessary. So I trundled along near the rear of the convoy, with 38psi in my donuts.
Anyway, the 50mm long, fairly deep cut, was able to be fixed in Adelaide and I got it back today.
The overall wear rates of my 10ply ST's is quite acceptable, but I must admit, I was tossing up between them, MT/Rs and another set of BFG muddies (which is what I had previously). In the end I just didn't have enough info about the MT/Rs to make an informed decision, so I went with the flow (and the advertising hype). So far so good, but MT/Rs will certainly be on my shopping list next time.

We too had Cooper ST's fitted before our 3 month trip this year. Admittedly, we did do a lot of off bitumen roads i.e. Simpson, Gunbarrel, CSR, Mitchell Plateau, Gulf and the Cape, but after 23300kms, the rear ones were stuffed (to put it politely). Bits have fallen off the lugs everywhere and there are many slashes in the side walls. So much for the 80000km guarantee. I thought they were built for offroad. Why else have them. We were offered two new tyres for half price by Coopers. We have a lightweight camper on an ST Patrol flat tray with coils all round. We were probably carrying 1/2 tonne weight all up. We were not driving stupidly either.

Patsy,
Sorry to read about your bad experience with the Coopers. Do you know if yours are 10ply or 8 ply? When I bought mine several months ago, the bloke got prices for both for me.....the 10plys were only about $10- each dearer, so I went that way. So far, I have noticed a few bits missing off some outer lugs. The actual wear rate seems okay, but I will know more in 5 weeks when we get back from Cape York trip.....expect to do around 12,000klm in 4 weeks, which will make a total of 40,000 all up on them by then. Your tray back probably only weighs about the same as my wagon (3050kg before i load everything into/on for a trip).

Hi Roachie
Ours are 10ply. Hope you have better luck with yours.
Cheers

"he had two 200litre drums of diesel in the back as well as a fridge and a huge tool box"...

Remind me, 200ltr drums are same as 44 gallon drums?

Must be a lot of room in the back...

Truckster,

I have had three 200litre drums, a 32 litre Engel and three toolboxes (normal sized carry handle type ones) in the back of my dual cab Rodeo prior to getting a canopy. Two of the drums had water and one was empty.

If I can fit that in a dual cab styleside Rodeo then I am sure a Troopy would fit that in easily enough.

2 mates have cooper st's on cruisers and they are wearing pretty quickly also
they wont go these tyres again for that reason.
also on weekend as comparison i had bfg a/t and mate had his cooper st and he was towing off rd trailer (we were support for group of m/bike riders) and think track was black range track over dargo way-he went up fairly easily whilst i slipped a little so suppose coopers st may have a little bit more grip than bfg a/t but then again he may have had lower pressures.
both went up billy goats bluff easily-like a highway now compared to a few yrs ago
will certainly go either bfg m/t or will have aa look at the goodyr m/t but will stay away from coopers(even with their warranty(for what?????? part replacement cost-what a con-good sales pitch-makes u stay with them )),

Hmm new ATR is pretty good as well is it ?? has it got the same sidewall thickness etc. as the MTR ?? I have only seen a picture of them and they looked pretty meaty in the tread.

Hey there champ, i popped into a goodyear dealer today and had a look at the atr , not a patch on the mtr, sidewall felt as thin and soft as a cooper , they are made in korea i think he said, and it shows.

He sells heaps of the mtr and even gives a 2 week guarantee on them, if you aren't happy with them they will change them over for another type. He said he had only had two comebacks in all the time they have been around, one bloke was a landscaper and the mtr's were chewing up the grass surfaces too much, and the other was a hilux which suffered some clearance trouble, but no issue with the tyres themselves.. Gave them a good rap on the road as well, even took me for a squirt in a 80 series with mtr's on, very impressed with the noise, or should i say lack of it !!

Even better was the load rating on the 245/75/16 - 1450 kg about 400 kg better than the stock tyres !!

They are the Goodyear dealers at Micham Vic on the Marroonda Hwy i think it was. Best place i have found for actuall knowledge on the mtr.
