Just installed Windows XP SP2 and now when I change from one user to another on the PC the internet connection hangs up, it didnt do it pre SP2, its just stayed connected.

Any one got any clues to assist me its bloody annoying, not to mention costs each time

Sounds like soething is ticked that you didn't have ticked before. Should I wait or go ahead and put it on the systems here?

Evening all

I have personally installed this sucker on 3 computers in the past week.

(1) Month old Laptop - no issues

(2) 4 month old desktop - Windows explorer continually went into hang mode when opening the 'tree'

(3) Brand new Laptop (same as above one) - once SP2 was installed none of the external access ports would work. ie Telephone cable, USB, ethernet.

Only solution so far has been to remove the mongrel of a thing.

I have heard of numerous other complaints that have 'flooded' my computer supplier, and the only available 'fix'they can offer is to uninstal it.

Good luck and have a good one

Ive installed on 30 pc's this week. Not one issue!

I think its the higher level of security, incase it was dialled up and you didnt realise it. It hangs it up, incase it was a dodgey internet connection.

How to save on costs? Go Broadband! No dial up costs.

YMMV

Bonz

I upgraded some things on my computer just last week. My PC Guru told me he would not install SP2 because it is not worth the trouble in its current format.

I know nothing really about computers but am glad I have a whiz who does. He could have just taken my money.

I would un-install SP2 if you can and wait for a later edition with all the fixes on it.

good luck.

hahahaha jokes on me, I went thru the will I wont I thing and Andrew (a different one) assured me he hadn't had problems as did lots of other happy SP2 recipients.

So jump in the deep end, have a problem and all the other ones fall out of the woodwork, I should have posted this BEFORE I installed it hahahahahaha

It may be that the auto disconnect has been checked or disconnect if no longer required (or similar). I have checked mine to ask if I want to disconnect rather than auto

Hi Bonz
Have installed on two desktop and one laptop and no issues once we ticked the right boxes, but like truckster went cable after working out how many times we lost the dial up, worked out much less frustrating and much faster access to exploroz.

If you are a GURU then install it, if problems arise you then have the excitement of finding it and fixing it.
If you know nothing about computers...DONT INSTALL IT JUST YET.

Wait till the experst find a fix to the problems it has.
Its a simple rule of thumb guys....
Never jump in on a new product, wait till all the bugs have been found by others that jump in first.

I'll add my twopence worth too ....
After I upgraded to SP2 my 1.8Ghz/1Gb RAM PC took up to 1 minute to open IE6 (to ExploreOZ), and MS Outlook emails took up to 15 seconds to open. (Optus 2Mbps cable).
After removing SP2 and thus reverting to SP1 it now takes perhaps 2 seconds to open IE6 and the emails open immediately.
The old expression about "pioneers get arrows in the back" applies once again and so I've asked my wife to thump me if she hears me say that I'm going to upgrade this or that - I'll stay one release behind whatever MS put out.

I installed it and it changed lots of stuff. It also activated my firewall at every keystroke and I couldn't turn it off no matter what. I ditched and deleted and restored.

Thanx for all the replies, I googled as Truckster advised, in fact was googling AS he advised, and also called my ISP who told me to Google too as they arent supposed to advise on registry changes. Added a registry key and also rejigged my dialup which Mr SP2 had changed to be only active for me only, bloody dumb ass thing to do, anyways I have the Knowledge base articl numbers and stuff if people are having troubles like this PITA one.

What really gives me the irrits is that Microsoft think they know what is best for me, Bloody Outlook telling me I cant look at attachments is shiatting me to tears amongst other things. Sad that they have to do this to save the LCD from invasion from virus artistes across the globe, hackers and general no-gooders. if ya want any other info email me at gandratdatafastdotcomdotau.

had a similar issue with SP1 for XP

Lost modem connection....could not get it back...some areas of setup greyed out...
Rang microsoft and afetr they took credit card details the tech support person took me way way back into registry and we made a back up of a particular file and deleted it...went to create new ADSL connection and no probs

Some months later I had hard disk failure so went took oportunity to upgrade computer. Loaded xp and started working setting evrything up and went on my way for a couple of weeks. Relaising i hadnt put SP1 on i installed it....same thing happend lost ADSL connection & could not get it setup. Rang microsoft and agin after taking my credit card details escorted me thru same proceedure.

A yr or so later I upgraded again and guess what, same problem. Only happens after sp1 loaded...3 differnt machines so it cant be hardware...rang microsoft who again help me delete file and I asked what it might be ...probably a software conflict but they dont know with what. Could be anyone of a number of programmes?
works okay on my sons comp....but he doesnt have some programmes I have like quickbooks and shareanalyser??? I wonder if its one of these...

Although Microsoft took credit card details on all occasions they did not charge me. Standard practice to take card details just in case it aint their fault I guess?
