Hello,
I have a question regarding the ZD-30 Turbo Diesel engine. I seen on Ebay Motors that a guy is selling 20 of these engines BRAND NEW for what seems a very low price, around $600 US. Is there any US market Nissan's that I could bolt this engine to? also are the electronic controls that I'd need available in salvage yards?
Thanks,
Bruce
P.S. I wish we in the U.S. could get more of the 4-wheelers ya'll have down under!

Bruce,
Look very hard for info from Nissan as to the build date on these engines. There have been a number of failures and these could be new old stock of the early motors. This is incredibly cheap. Warranty claim invoices here have been over $10000 (fitted) for a long motor (head, block pistons etc etc)
New model ZD30 engines seem OK after a large number of internal changes.
There are different engine harnesses too, and they would be very hard to find I expect
Overall they are a great engine with some fatal teething problems
They are found in our latest Navara (Frontier) and elsewhere I think they are in the Pathfinder. Nissan is fairly good at keeping things standard accross models, ie gearboxes. The matched auto box here is found in a 2wd nissan car too but maybe different internals.
Cheers

Bruce ,Take great care.
As the previous correspondent states, the early model engines have problems.
You need to ensure they have the modified sumps and other mods that Nissan made to the later engines.
If you get the later engines, they go like rockets on the smell of an oily rag.
Good luck

I'd be very suspicious of this deal. I can't see any way that anyone in Australia could legitimately sell a complete new ZD30 for around AU$900 (US$600 give or take). You couldn't even by a replacement turbo for that price, let alone a fuel pump.

Well, I just got out my workshop manual, just to check a proper specification rather than lifting the bonnet, and not one of those engines looks anything like the ZD30. In fact, they don't even look the same. Just look at where the turbo, oil filter etc are located.

Remember this one.....?
"IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS"
The picture looks nothing like a ZD30. Look at the oil filter location and angle for a start.!
DREAM ON
Throw A$900 on black or red roulette at the casino. At least you have a 50/50 of getting something back.

Thanks for all the replies! Truly, this is a buyer beware situation with no way of knowing if the are the early or late ZD-30 engines!.....anything that seems to good to be true, usually is! I am going to put a GM 6.6L turbo diesel or a 4.45L Izuzu turbo diesel in my 1945 1 1/2 Chevrolet truck that I am streetrodding. I also have a 1999 Ford
Ranger 4x4 pickup with a 3.0L V-6. I seen my first 4-door pickup in africa in the late 80's, now they are all the rage here!..I really like the trucks you have had in Australia...tough and functional!!! I'm afraid our trucks are more like cars, too many gadgets and few ever leave the pavement!
Regards,
Bruce
