Hello everyone
I'm a new member - looks like this is a great way to get good advice.
We have a Pajero NP 2004 and are wondering how the single rear door will go with towing - will we be able to fully open the rear door with a camper trailer attached, and will we be limited in which camper trailer we can have.
We have a drawer system fitted in the Pajero, which proved excellent in our last trip (not towing). The fridge, unfortunately, is on the hinge side of the door, so the question is not only can we open the rear door, but also can we easily slide out the fridge in its drawer and access the fridge. I don't much like the idea of stepping across the brake lever, gas bottle etc to get to the fridge.
The suggestions we have received so far are
1 Jack knife whenever we
park, so the door clears - doesn't sound practical
2 Maybe the brake lever can be modified so the door clears
3 Have the camper trailer modified so the towing arm (I don't know the correct name for this - the bit that attaches to the tow bar on the Pajero) is longer.
Has anyone any experience or suggestions?
Many thanks, Beagle

I found that once I changed over to a Treg hitch, which has a lower profile than the conventional hitch, there was no more problem with the rear swing door opening.
You could borrow a Treg hitch already mounted on the Hayman Reese attachment and try it out before you buy.

I would suggest when you find a camper make sure it has a long drawbar (ie) 5' or longer and have the things that go on the drawbar as close to the front of the camper as possible, the brake lever is normally down and out of the way while attatched to the car anyway, as for the gas bottle put that on the side of the camper they usually sit in front or back of the wheel arch, keeping stuff as far away from the tow hitch as possible is a good thing anyway, less weight over the towball makes for more stable towing and as said above tregg hitch is better and better for off road too, there are adjustable hitches as
well. Those sideways opening doors are a bugger !! Oh welcome to
forum great bunch of people here.
Baz.

I tow a trailer with my Pajero (which has a standard hitch). I find that the rear door, if opened, will just hit the trailer's brake handle.

I have a Trak Shak behind my NP with a treg hitch and don't have any problems with opening the door, but I think it does come close to the brake handle but certainly doesn't hit it.

Have a similar issue with my NM. I carry a spare (or 2) lying flat on the drawbar and the door catches on it. I have an Orac coupling so have no problems there. I find jacknifing the trailer works OK, if you have room. My fridge slide is on the passengers side. I can swing my door half open and access the fridge fine allthough I still jacknife if stopping for lunch etc. Can you get yours swapped over?
John
