Can anyone give me an idea on what a Timing Belt tensioner sounds like when its on the way out. I have a 97 model diesel cruiser (1HZ) with about 140000 klms on the clock. I have a noise that sounds almost like a loose belt vibrating, and it increases with the increase in Revs. All other belts are fine, and its not a lifter kind of noise. I have heard that these tensioners can be a problem on this engine. Is this true.

Change it. They can be a problem. I assume you have changed the timing belt at 100.000 , right?. Way to check it is to pull timing belt off and check the tensioner for play. If in doubt change it anyway they are not expensive. If you let it fail , damage alone will be enough to make you cry.

Take off the timing cover and put a screwdriver to your ear, listen to each part of the motor. (be careful not to slip) usually this brg is good for 2 belt changes.
U may find it is the water pump or similar.

If its your water pump Make sure that you undo the cam nut with the belt on. I just changed mine (WP) (have all ready changed Timing belt 2 months ago) (no problems) but when undoing my cam cog it went backwards and bent some valves ($2614 later).

I had a noise that I thought was the belt tensioner once and it turned out to be shot wheel bearings. Not saying this is the case but give it some thought cos you don't want to be seizing your bearings.
cheers
