Ive got one lined up to buy its got 166,000kms on the clock, What are they worth (private sale) Its in good condition One owner, log books etc. ? Do they have trouble with the turbo at a certain age etc. ? Any feed back on them would be great

If you do a search of the archives there is lots of info about these engines here.

They have an issue with the big end bearings or something like that.

Toyota pulled them from the market due to reliability concerns. The 4.2 td was only re-introduced fairly recently. I believe the 80s td came out in 2 configurations 12 and 24 valve with the 24 valve being the pick of them

Wardy my 91 TD has been a great car and has had no probs untill 3 weeks ago when the big end bearing failed and mashed the whole bootom end of the engine. $6500 later and nearly a complete rebuild I should be getting it back this week.

Moral of the story is get the bearing replaced when you buy it. The newer bearings are stronger and they have not had any probs with them. It may cost up to $500 to get them done now but that is damn cheap and I wish I had done the same. I was told to look for metal filings in the oil at changes and replace if any were found. I made sure this was done but it didn't help.

All reports from mechanics I have spoken to say that the engine is strong and reliable except for the bearings in the early ones pre 94. Mine has done 230, 000 km and everything else is going like new. I love the car it has served me well over the last couple of years so if yours has done 160km's it should last you for a lot longer. The turbo was looked at while the engine was out and the mechanics said there was a little bit of play in the turbine but that it would be fine for some time to come.

Good luck and get the bearing done regardless.

Charlie

Hi
These early model had a few teething problems. if you budget $500 for a new set of big ends every 100,000kms, all will be ok. I would also suggest oil be used with Jap calcium specs like CJX caltex, high in Calcium for good bigends. lol.
Sounds like a magnificent vehicle if it has books and original 160kms, the normal kms of one of these would be double that!

Mine has 300.000km and still runs great. Had the bearings done at 220,000km. How much are you looking at paying for this one????

Mine has done just under 300,000kms. Replaced the big ends at 240,000kms. Been a great vehicle. My advice would be to go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Wardy
I have owned 6 HDJ81
This is the Code for the Jap imports 80# 4.2 TD
I use them for work and pleasure, I sell them at about 300,000 to date I have had no problems at all from any part of the trucks.
There is a recomendation that the big end shells are changed at 100,00 the same as the cam belt.
Bearings $100
Sump sealer $40
Labour 3 hours
I only did this on the pre 1993 trucks
Your choice of 12 or 24 valve engines, although the specs are different it is not so obvious on the road
Good luck
Ray
