Has anyone modified the wiring to their power windows on a GU ST Patrol so you don't need the key on? Just hoping someone knows which wire/relay needs to be hotwired. I haven't tried tracing the wiring yet, hoping someone has already done that so I don't have to re-invent the wheel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Cap, agree it's a pain in the ar** so be pleased to hear. I had simple jumper in a previous car. What it may do for your insurer though I am not sure.

Hope you got all the flowers bloomin in WA for next 10 days...........

Hi John,

Wouldn't have thought it should affect insurance, after all windup windows can be used without a key. But who knows, insurance companies are a law unto themselves.

There is a thread somewhere in the Auto Electrics section on OuterLimits which says it contravenes an ADR. It has the particular one listed there but basically your windows have to operate via the key. Although they can operate up to 45 seconds after. Various other exceptions for auto wind up on alarms etc but has to go through key.

You could always just have a jumper in the fuse box which can be removed easily so long as it doesn't also turn other things on or flatten your battery.

Hi Utemad,

Don't know why it should affect ADR's as a normal windup window can be used without a key, but thanks for the tip, will see if I can find out more.

This thread details how to change it so they work in the accessories postion rather than the ignition position:

Hi Andrew,

Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for. I will probably wire in an overide switch so normally you need the key on, but can flick a switch and use without the key. I will check if there is a powerdrain, as I would not have thought the Power windows would draw any current unless operating, may wire to permanent power if no drain.

Thanks again

I have a Ford that allows the windows to be wound up or down for a couple of minutes after the ignition is switched off.
Could the Red/Yellow wire that Robin Miller speaks about in the link be run instead to power a relay that remains powered for a minute or two after the key is removed completely.
eg. the fuse end of the Red/Yellow powers some sort of timed relay, the window end of the Red/Yellow to one side of the relay and the battery to the other side of the relay?
Sounds good to me.

Hi Scrubba,

I also have a Hyundai Trajet (people mover) and that too has a ~45 second delay. However, I often find that I want to put the window down several minutes later, say if waiting to pick kids up and its hot in the vehicle. For me. I reckon a permanent connection is probably the best way to go, did it to a Calais I had years ago and was the best thing I did (plus a timed relay sounds more complictaed ;-).

Keep an eye on the Patrol Forum at http://forum.patrol4wd.org/phpBB2 as all of the Yahoo Group archives (4 years and over 20,000 posts) are being compiled into threads and posted there. Will be a MASSIVE resource of Patrol info when completed. Will take 1-2 months.
