My mate's looking at buying his first 4by, he's found a 1991 Short Wheel Base Pajero with 215k'm on the clock.
The car is in showroom conition,it's fantastic, factory centre and rear diff locks etc.
Suspension's in good nick, spotless inside and out every single service from 1200kms to 200k complete in the book, yet the 3.0L V6 is leaking oil and looks as though it may be getting a little "long in the tooth". (I don't like those motors anyway, I think they are a little crappy IMHO).
Question is, how much would he be looking at to replace the motor or recon it? is it MEGA bucks, or any other suggestions. If it's cheap enough to recon or replace the motor, he might have a great car for a good price...

Depends on Why that oil is leaking.
Its fairly common for these motors to need a freshin up around the 200k's mark.
That normal involves the heads getting serviced , new valve seals etc. Cost is a couple of hundred from memory ($4 or $500 possibly).
As for recon/replace. I replaced the V6 in my PJ with a low k's import for $1500 , not sure if they are still available though.
An exchange motor for these is around $3000 or so (its been a while since I looked at them though).

Ok, thanks for the info, he has the RAC going to inspect it today, hopfully they will do a compression test and tell him where the oil is comming from.
Are there any known problems with the synchros/gear boxes on these cars, it's a 5 speed manual.

Howdy mate,
Flappans right!
I have two mates with pajeros and those motors seem to tire really quickly, if it's in good nick, I'm sure the yard wants some decent cash for it???
Up to your mate of course, but perhaps guide him/her to another vehicle...
Cheers
Chris.

Yeah they want basically red book for it. By a total fluke I got put onto the previous owner of the vehicle, I got the price he traded it for, so I've told my mate that depending on what the engine conition is like to try and get the price of repair off the sale price and see how he goes. There is plenty of room for the dealer to move!

Nice work mate.
Gotta do what you can with these car yards, you never know how much they tack on! Trouble is, we all fall in love with a car and become emotionally attached. Good that your mate asked you along as an independent eye...

LOL It was such a jag, I left the yard drove down to conventrys to get some parts, but the gates were closed, so I turned into the next
carpark to do a u turn, I happend to know the guys that own the camper trailer
shop in the
carpark and one of them was standing out the front having a smoke. Wound the window down, said g'day and he asked what I'd been up to, said looking at the mitsi up the road for a mate, he new someone who new the previous owner and had his mobile number!!!
The only trouble is (even though I hate mitsubishi's with a passion) I fell in love with it two, it's so cute! Handles awsome and with factory rear dif lockers and super select it would be an awsome little machine on
the beach! Pitty about the bleep week motors... Will see what happens.

They actually aren't too bad a motor , especially in a SWB.
They get along pretty
well.
The issue as I recall is that they aren't really a 4wd motor. They work best with a few revs on board (about 3,000 rpm).
The same motor (6G72) is still being used in the Challenger , so they cant be all bad.

gday jeff.
i dont wana know about 3ltr pajero motors done nothing but reco them this year on our 4th one oi think(not
mine customers)lolol
problems so far have been cooked motor around $4000
2 with cracked heads not sure of price but wasnt cheap
and one run low on oil might have been just as cheap to fit a reco one $3000.
another thing to keep in mind is they only hold around 5 litres of oil so very easy on big climbs ect to loose pressure if oil is down a little
