A new troopie for 2005 is the likely vehicle of choice for next year and I need to finalise an order in the next couple of months so that I can get an 05 produced vehicle delivered not too far into the new year. I am now looking at the options I want and tyre size (not type) is one of the key decisions.
I note that the final drive ratios are quite high with a 4.3:1 diff ratio for the TD (4.1:1 for the HZ) and I am hoping I can gain some relief from taller tyres. I do not want to muck around with diff ratios and will get the std factory lockers so even more incentive to leave
well alone. From the maths I have done a 33" tyre would be a good outcome given my intended use.
Can anyone advise whether a current standard height Troopie will physically take 285/75/16" tryes? These are about a 33" (32.9") tyre and to fit these I will need 16x8" rims.
Failing this option I trust 16x7" or 16x8" rims with 265/75/16" (31.8"diameter) will be a comfortable fit.
Some guidance in the range of possibilities would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

265/75/16" are standard diameter for the Troopy.
I have this size om my 2003 78 series on 7" rims.
Keeps the speedo at the right reading etc and no insurance hassles.
I think others have been running 285/75/16 without any problems in terms of fit.

A tad confused here, and no offence intended ... but if you find "the final drive ratios are quite high", why would you want to go higher by fitting a larger tyre??
No doubt I'm missing something.

Actually it's the other way around - the 1HZ has the lower ratio, 4.3:1, and the turbo diesel is higher at 4.1:1.
Check this link:

I would suggest driving one with standard
wheels on it to see how it goes, before mucking around with bigger
wheels!
Cheers
