Hi ALL

Newbie to the board but that wont stop me asking questions ! Spent a considerable amount of time at this weekends Camping show at Panthers and I must say, I did like the Camper-Trailer made by Allterrain Camper trailers out of Seven Hills.

Their URL is here

It seemed like a good sturdy unit, the one we looked at with lots of bits n pieces was around the $17K mark. I've been all over the Track-Shak unit, I like it but dont want to spend that much. Has anyone out there had one of these AllTerrain units, are they happy with it, comments ????? The more info the better please as its ALL confusing...We are looking to do a considerable amount of outback touring with some time spent on the coast.....

Any pointers would be appreciated !!

Ciao Pete

Welcome Sandboy,
Are you able to hire one and try it out on a trip? There is no better way to decide whether the rig suits you or you can bend to suit the rig.

Hi Camper (SA)

If I could hire one I'd be in heaven :-) Unfortunately I havent found anyone that hires them..The guy that runs the business has just left for 5 weeks holidays out to Cameron and Beyond, oh well when he gets back, we'll go for another visit..

Thanks for the suggestion :-)

Don't mean to talk you out of a Allterain, but it sounds pretty much like the setup we've got in our full off-road Cavalier except we got ours for $8500 brand new. Obviously don't have options like shower/12volt etc but I presume the $17k didn't include many options. Ours did not come with the kitchen though, just a bench and sink with manual pump that folds from the rear swinging door. Ours is the full monte, with 14 foot main area, front awning (gable!) with windbreak, fly screen all around. Made of 12oz HD canvas. Actual trailer sounds pretty similar. Both could well do with a little work eg. shockers/springs and electric brakes if prolonged rough driving is required (like Cape York), but apart from that they seem pretty similary. Don't know their availability in your state, but worth a look. I know other states do get them imported so to speak.

Hope this helps

Hi D-Jack

I gotta say, so many options, limited bank account and an absolute desire to buy something :-) I've gone through the trials of looking at the Trak-Shak, Jayco and then Corimal Pop-Top. Yes they are all so very different with different levels of comfort....I've decided to start at the "junior" end of outdoor living and move up when the old back tells me I need an innerspring bed.

The AllTerrain beast seemed to be built very well, the welding looked of good quality, draw bar was of solid construction and leaf springs looked solid enough to take a pounding. Canvas was 12oz, the bars holding up th canvas were of square tubing, not too bad. The Kitchen seemed agricultural, made of ply wood painted, will do the job but not outstanding. The paint finnish seemed good, how it will handle the weather, I dont know, I'm used to galvanised trailers however everyone tells me, hot dip them and they will warp and you cant seal them. I looked at the Trak-Shak 12 months ago and probably would have bought one if Peter would Galvanise it....since then I've changed my mind.

Mr AllTerrain did highlight the strength in the tubing holding up the roof and I must admitt, its sturdy.. I still cant see $17K in a trailer however its only worth what someone is prepared to pay.....

Thanks for the feedback, I did look at Cavalier however no local dealers.

CIao and regards..Pete

Hi Pete,

We own an AllTerrain Camper and love it. Ours is a 2001 Model and there have been some changes since our model. We actually bought our camper second hand from AllTerrain for $9900. Lucky for use a few of the options had been added so made for a great deal.

It is very heavy duty, sometime we think a little heavy for the majority of the travel we do. Sometime we wish we'd bought a lighter weight trailer, but other than that we think it's great.

I think the best thing is to hire a camper of some sort take it away for a weekend or longer and write all the things you like and don't like and try and find one that fit the majority of your list.

We had a 6 week time frame to find one and wish we'd had longer, but luckily love the one we have.

Any questions feel free to ask!!

I can back up Steve & Sandy about their camper having seen it at Newnes just last weekend we nearly bought one ourselves, it's a good unit well built, strong and easy to set up. Campers are a personal thing so what suits one person might not suit another, you won't be dissappointed if you buy the All Terrain.

I had a look at the All Terrain down here in Canberra.

Very nice unit.

A friend on mine is looking at one.

From memory , their pricing structure was a bit funny (didn't include gst or something ??? ). If you exactly what your paying , they wouldn't be too bad.

The Guys at Complete Campsite at Gosford , also make an excellent CT for around $12000 , fully kitted.

Sandboy,

We also own the Allterrain Camper. Have had it for over 2 years now & we love it. We got the 14 foot model & we did not get it with all the bells & whistles to start with, so I think the price was around the 11k mark. One of the good things about them is you can get the bells & whistles added on at any stage, which is what we have done. When I was purchasing mine, the deciding factor for me was the quality of construction compared to all the other trailers. Also in terms of value for money, I know there trailers have won best value for money at the Rosehill caravan & camping show in the camper trailer catagory, at least once.

Also the after sales service from Glen & Trish is great. They do not drop you like a hot rock as soon as you hand over the cash, you become part of the Allterrain family, with yearly customer get togethers etc.

As mentioned above, they are a heavy unit(because of the solid construction) so you will need to have one of the fair dinkum 4wd's to tow with, but other then that, if the set-up suits your needs, don't hesitate.

Hope this helps,
OM&M

Hi Mousie

Thanks for the reply, the content is really great ! Just got off the phone from Allterrain, looks like the Penrith show was great for them, wont be able to get one till after Christmas, oh well.

ANyway I like the idea of being able to add on, soemthing I wouldnt be shy in doing, have the Mig gear and metal cutting gear at home. I like the boat rack that TrakShak has so thats the only sizeable improvement I'd add. They do sound like sincere people which makes the purchase even better so now I have to wait...

Just picked up a T/D Prado, 6 weeks old so I think it should haul the trailer ok.....

Thanks for the post, its great to hear from so many people wanting to share their experiences.

Ciao Pete

Hi Pete,

Not sure what your situation is re: kids etc but if you have a family you might find the Camprite TL8 offroad camper of interest. Their URL is here or alternatively we've got a lot of pics and info about our Camprite on our website

We have one of these and can't say enough good about them. Absolutely fantastic unit. IMHO one of the best units around for families. Basically they can accommodate 2 adults and up to 4 kids, plus a central "living" area flanked by bench seating all and all off-the-ground under the main roof. The central living area is big enough to set up a card table to use during bad weather or if you just want to get away from the flies/bugs whilst your eating. This means you don't have to set up the awning for quick stopovers. Kitchen is mounted on the rear door so it swings open under the awning and is fully accessible for roadside stops. Other features include large nose cone storage box, 2 x side tool boxes, 2 x jerry can holders, 2 x gas bottle holders, 55L water tank, 12V lighting, electric brakes, indepent coil suspension and more.

One thing that attracted us too them was that most everything you need is standard and included in the base purchase price which made them pretty good value when compared with other manufacturers who wanted extra $ for everything. And no, we aren't affiliated with them in anyway, just very happy Camprite owners.

Hi Sandboy,

I bought one in 2002 and have never regreted it. As mentioned in other posts, you wont find a stronger Trailer. We find the internal access from inside the tent, into the side of the trailer great as it means we don't have to lug our clothes from the back of the trailer into the tent and back each night.

We completed a two month trip in the NT and outback Qld with friends that had a Kimberly Kamper, we found our trailer was quicker to setup, kept the dust out better, and had more room on wet days when you have kids. During this trip we had to do some deep river crossings, water was above the bottom of the doors on the trailer, and no water got in.

We pull the trailer with a 2000 Prado TD without a hassel, the extra long drawbar is great for reversing the trailer, and we also find we have minimal, if any, sand and rocks kicked back at the car (no damage to rear window or paint, and we have no stone guards on the trailer or car). However after the long trips the front of the trailer does look like it has been sandblasted, but All Terrain will re-paint for the small sum of $50, makes it look brand new again.

Our friends bought one to tow behind a Subaru Outback, and All Terrain were happy to make a cross between their On-road and Off-road version for them.

The wait is worth it, if you can don't need the camper straight away.

hope this helps

A happy All Terrain owner.
