Woundering if anyone can give me any info on changing from the std 100 series 275 to 285/75/16 possibly cooper st. What change was there in the speedo fuel economy, proformance or is it not worth worring about.

Thanks for any help, regards Rob

Rob,
I have fitted 285 BFG AT's on my 100 TD. Speedo is out by 3 or 4 k's only, fuel consumption is up from when the vehicle was standard but I think its more to do with extra weight and loss of aerodynamics from a host of accessories fitted and not the tyres. On a recent 15000 km trip the average mileage was 13.5 litres per 100km. The larger tyres also give you a little more ground clearance which helps with the ifs limitations when it comes to lifting the vehicle.

Cheers,
Stu

Thanks Stu,

That 15000 km I asume the td was fully loaded. I to have the td hence the larger diameter wouldn't mind knowing what you have added to the td in accesssories.

Rob,
Unfortunately it was my parents who clocked up the 15000 k's, not me, and they are not campers so the cruiser was not carrying a big load (fridge, clothing, recovery gear etc.)
The accessories fitted are, ARB B/Bar, 8000lb winch, IPF lights, Kaymar rear bar & 1 wheel carrier, ARB roof rack, Snorkel, 3rd Battery & TJM isolator, TJM Cell X9 Shocks & Coils, 285/75 BFG AT's on steel rims (I use the standard tyres on alloys around town), Cargo barrier, GME 3400 UHF, I have ARB side rails and steps which are yet to be fitted.
FYI. When I picked up the vehicle earlier this year from country NSW on my return trip to Syd travelling most the way at 100-110 I got 10.3 litres per 100km.

Cheers
Stu

Croozer,
I have a similar set up still to install snorkel, winch and upgrade suspension. How do you find the x9 and coils? I have the kaymar twin pivet and have fitted coil-rites to bring it back to height. Have you adjusted the torsion bars due to the extra weight over the front?

Thanks Rob

Rob
The coils I have are the extra heavy duty TJM (King Springs) KTRR 70HD. I had these on my 80 series which also had a kaymar rear bar and wheel carrier and they seem to be just right for this setup. When I then fitted a 180 litre aux fuel tank on the 80 series I had to go to the super heavy duty KTRR 70HHD springs which were perfect for the extra weight. I am yet to load the 100 up with my drawer system and all camping gear so it will be interesting to see how the extra heavy duty springs go. As for the Cell X9's so far they are ok, they have only done about 2000 km off road so have not really been punished yet. Having said this the rear shocks (given that on cruisers they are in front of the axle) have had a beating from stones and the guards that are fitted to protect the adjusting knob are essential, they got bent but did their job. You really notice the difference between setting 1 and 9.
I have had the standard tortion bars adjusted up about 25mm above standard and they are performing well so far, the only other option is to spend $700+ on aftermarket bars which until the standard ones are stuffed I thought was not necessary for my use. So far I am very happy with the whole setup, hopefully the addition of side bars and steps soon will not affect it too much.

Stu,
Suspension has been abit of a headache but will do what you've done. If your ever up at Mt Hotham take a trip down to Dinner Plain and pop in for a coffee etc, would like to have a look at your rig you can see mine in the drive.

Regards Rob

Have fitted coopers 265/75/16 s to my TD 100. The speedo when checked against the GPS is exact with the coopers on and 3 to 4 kph out with the origonals.
The GPS is very accurate when it comes to speed.

Coopers have been very good. Not any more noise and wear seems to be very good. I have done about 35 k on them and still not half worn. The back ones copped a lot on a trip I did last year. Towed a camper and had the Td loaded to the top. Went over some of the worst roads in the north West and NT.One punture when I listened to some poor advice and ran the tyres at low pressures on shale roads. Did the rest of the trip with preasures much higher and no trouble. The Coopers have very straight side walls and ballon easier than most. This is good in the sand but on sharp rocky roads have them as high as you can stand.

I have a 100 Series TD with 285/75/16's - Mine are Dick Cepek's which are a Mickey Thomson tyre - they have slightly more tread than the coopers. Jury is still out on how they last - only done 6,000 k's - My speedo is shows 105kph @ 100kph on the GPS.

I can't comment on fuel economy as the vehicle is still running in. But I got 16L/100ks on a trip to Wodonga last week sitting on 110 the whole way (cruise control) towing a 800kg camper trailer. I was a bit disapponted and would expect much better economy at 90-100kph.

On balance I would certainly recommend the 285's because they give you about 25mm extra clearance.

Gary,
Have looked up the Dick Cekeps, where they pricey compared to the Cooper S/T as I was quoted $1140 (285/75/16 S/T) for 5 in Albury

Rob, Don't know about fuel econ or performance, but for speedo difference go to www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html , click on wheel & tyre bible on l/h menu & scroll down to tyre calculator.
hope it helps.

Rob,
Have 15k on Coopers AT 285x75x16 on a '03, 100 series. So far so good. No punctures, had 3 in 30 k on the Grandtreks. Good points, ride better over small bumps, handle as good or better than the GT's wet or dry, extra ground clearence included, improved traction in marginal conditions, at least as quiet as GT's, Economy not noticeably affected. Not so good points, may require 3rd to pass oil burners, but sounds great while doing so ;- . Rotate every 10k for 80k warranty (do so at 10k service) Speedo shows 100, GPS say 103. YMMV
