Have a second hand Simon Heard camper trailer with alko suspension; heading to Flinders Ranges on the weekend (from Western Victoria). First big trip, 2 weeks in total. Rawnsley Park, Chambers Gorge and Arkaroola etc. Maybe shoot down to Port Lincoln for a few days on the way home. Me, wife and 4 children.

The plate on the trailer says 50 kpa cold for tyre pressure. This is approx 10 psi. I am assuming this is the go, it just seems very low. Local tyre man very reluctant to only put 10 psi in tyres.

Anyone with experience or advice. Thanks.

10 psi is stupidly low.

You should go with what the tires themselves recommend.

Thank you everyone for the comments and advice.

Simon Heard says 35 psi and the trailer manufacturer says 40 psi.

However they tell me the idea is to put a amount of air in the tyres to minimise the bounce (loaded trailer weight also a factor)

Me thinks 25 psi might be a good start.

See you in the Flinders, hopefully I'll be in one piece.

There is someone else out there with a Simon Heard. Ours is 4 years old and has clocked up 25,000 km of dirt roads. Looks very second hand at the moment as all the paint is stripped from the front by rocks.
The 10 psi is very low, I run 22 on the dirt & 25 on the black top. Never had a flat (touch wood) on the trailer.

Nup . . . to low.

I also have a SH , CT.

Mine has identical wheels and tyres (BFG AT's) as my Patrol.

I run only a couple of psi less then the Vehicle tyres.

Try this simple formula:

Divide max tyre pressure by max load rating then multiply the result by the actual load per tyre

You may have to look up your tyre specs on the net but it usually on the tyre. I am guessing you know the gross weight of the trailer (yeah right!)

It tends to give a result that is about 3psi too high.

Clear as mud eh?

IMO, 10 psi is possible for a light trailer in soft sand - but for general use, that has to be an error......as they others have said, 25 psi would be good for starters on a light trailer........see the tyre maker's specs if possible too.

If you can get your hands on September 2003 addition of Aust 4x4 (issue 236) and have a look at the parting pic. Guess what type of suspension failed on this camper trailer? It was ALKO . I will never again own this type of suspension and I would strongly recommend you thoruoghly try and check your suspension as this one snapped where you cannot see.
