Hi Guys,
I have searched the archives and can't seem to get a definite answer regarding the headlight lenses on the new GU's.

Are they glass or are they polytcarbonate?

I would like to install a loom and 90/130W globes or similar. I understand that the reflector is plastic and may be affected over time by the larger globes.

Mr Nissan can't give me a definite answer either, they wanted to sell me the +50 globes for about $70 a pair so I declined the offer and purchased the "narva blue" globes for $30 at another store. The narva's seem to give good illumination of road signs and markings but aren't great.

Any thoughts on loom/globe set up would be appreciated.

Peter

Glass! I was surprised as the Navara's are poly so I didn't ask for headlight protectors when I bought my beast and had to purchase them when I realised!!

Just for the record....
I have had the white globes in for 2years now...$100 pr....
One trip through Simpson and surrounds and one trip to Cape York and surrounds.....
No probs as yet....

When i priced the loom with 100/140 vs the whites, the whites won hands down.....
Where as the 100/140's are longer distance the whites are about the equivalent of 90/120's but are so piercing you get a daytime affect and the wattage is only 55/65.....

Hi Roachie... On the weekend i will go through my spares cupboard and try to find the old box...
I put my 100/140's in just for a while tonight to compare and i think i understated the "whites"....
I think they are a Phillips product....TJM sell em... They are the most expensive of the 4 or so they offer....

$119 a pr... Autobarn has a 'Demo' thing setup on the counter. I remember the Phillips name from it.

you press the button to the corrsponding light you want to test. They looked good, I said I'll take 2 sets thanks.. He then said that will be $240 thanks.. You can imagine what I said, but there were lots of @*#&$(*@&(#$&@(#$&(@#&(@#*&$(*@#($*&@(*#$&(@#**(@&#^(*&^@*(#^%*(@# in it... preceeded with you have to be pulling my ... and it wasnt leg.

I have issues with paying $100+ for light globes - no matter how good, specially if it blows within a week, Id bebleep, and have to dish out the same amount for new ones.

Just went through the same exercise a week ago.

Got a different answer from everyone I asked.

I ended up simply replacing the bulbs with 'Philips BlueVision 4000K' bulbs. This choice only because the salesperson at the store I ended up going to was the most convincing.

I don't know how long they are expected to last but they certainly give out a very different light. Very white and after a couple of evenings around town well worth the $69-00.

Just as a point of interest, one of the best responses I got from a retailer when asking about trying to get better lights and / or bulbs for my GU came from TJM Coopers Plains in Brisbane where the sales person told me that nothing could be done. When I asked if they were sure about that, they told me I might be able to get a different light bulb, but not to buy it from their store as they would be more expensive than most other chains. Well, I did as they said, and took my dollars elsewhere.

Thanks for your reply Andrew I also enquired about upgrading the globes in the IPF's and it was suggested to to me that I look at the HIR(not HID), which is exactly what I did. I looked at them and for $79 each with no guarantee that they won't be damaged while installing them into the IPF 900's(there may not be enough room in the housing for the long solid wire that comes out of the back of the globe and it can't be bent) I decided to stick with the 130W globes I have now.

You might get the impression that I like my lights bright and you'd be right.

If you are looking for a great set of lights for your bus, why not look at the HID lights. There is no filiment so no blown globes, only run at 35watts so no need to upgrade the loom but....they cost a bucket full
If you are interested try some importers as the local dealers will charge around the $1000 + mark

I have checked them out and there is a legal issue with getting them for high and low beams. The globe is the same but has a solenoid that moves the globe backward and forward. All in all they are a bit too expensive at this stage.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I put a set of the Phillips Vision Plus in last week prior to a night trip to Hilston, made a big difference over Std bulbs, a real white light.

Low beam was better but needs adjusting for suspension lift. Oh price for the bulbs $39.95.

I recently went through the same exercise. I'm told that the reflectors are poly and not glass. I spoke with a number of suppliers and all said not to upgrade the wattage output of the bulbs as it will eventually destroy the reflector finish. One person told me that they were in a battle at the moment with a customer that went against their recommendations and put in 100/90 in to a GU patrol and the centre section of the reflector is now discoloured (after only a few weeks).

One particular person at a wholesaler wanted to know driving situations to find the better bulbs. Turns out that the bulbs that either give a whiter or bluer light output don't actually give better range. Those bulbs are designed for suburn driving and allow better pick up of white lines, signs and particular clothing colours. However if you want improved visibility over distance on open roads then the best to use are the Plus 50% or Plus 30% put out by a number of companies. He also stated it was up to me but the more you pay for a bulb, up to a point the longer it will last and the better the rated output will be. I've found this with spot light bulbs, the cheap ones last a short time.

If you look at the display at AutoBarn the last two displayed bulbs are illegal in Aus. They don't met the ADR for colour tones, they are far to white. Just because the light is whiter doesn't mean you can see further, as above to a point it will make things stand out but no extra distance. You can buy these bulbs but if caught it means a fine (so I'm told) and you'll piss off all on coming traffic. Have you noticed some cars with lights that actually hurt your eyes??? That's these bulbs, very intense white light.

This is what I've found out by speaking to a number of wholesalers and a guy that specialises in lighting, though it's only that, info, if you think it works for you then great.

I put in +60 Bosh globes in my Hilux, and covered 12K's up through QLD, NT & WA. Mostly gravel / off road. Still going strong. Set me back $14 a globe from the auto 'leccie. Best money ever spent. A pair of Lightforce 170's would complete the picture though.

Cheers,

Glenn.
