I have just come back from a 2wk trip to the gulf and I am now looking at getting a generator for
camping. One of the guys on the trip had a 5kva scorpion generator which went like a champ. We ran a std chest freezer, a waeco FF90, a FF70, a 40l Engel, a 300l
camping freezer and lights. My question is what size generator would I need to run:
std chest freezer
FF90 waeco (via the 240v pack)
FF70 waeco (via the 240v pack)
Lights
I was thinking that an inverter generator would be better to get a smoother power supply would be handy if I want to run a computer. Scorpion generators are on sale for $659 (normally $899) for a 1kva (1.2kva peak) inverter gen set. I am unsure whether the 1kva is enough. I was thinking of getting a Honda EU10i or EU20i but thats alot of money invested in somthing that will get used twice a year.
You can check it out at Scorpion DY1500LBI
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

HI Justin
5kva is a big generator to run all that gear, you could have hooked up a house and ran that too. The honda EU inverter series are fantastic and are stable enough to run a computer. I have the EU20i and it is the best thing. They are so quiet so can hardly hear them. Our last trip away we ran three campsites off our honda. From memory there was 3 chest freezers, 2 chescolds, a toaster (a few fridges turned off) and all of the 240v fluro lights. We were running it for about 12-14hours on one 4 litre
tank of fuel. The Honda also has 12v output.
1kva should be plenty to run the few things you have mentioned and an inverter for that sort of money sounds good. Cheers

I only use it when we are out for 3-4 weeks in the middle of no where and no options for popping down to the
shop, such as
sandy cape at fraser island and you can not hear
mine unless you are in my
camp site. Each to their own, I love my comfy,
well lit, hot shower, cold beer fridge and huge chest freezer
campsite. and so do the people we go with and meet. hahaha

pjd how do you run a chest freezer on 12volt? You are correct with the other 12v appliances it would probably be more efficient to run them of a direct 12v supply but I feel a generator would be of more use.
