Next question :
My NH 3000 cc petrol Pajero has 255,000 on the clock. HunterCity (Dealer) tell me my valves are worn out and need replacement (engine blows smoke - especially on idle and consumes about 3 litres of oil every 4000 km or their abouts).
Anyone had the experience of having their NH Pajero' valves replaced ?
Is this likely to cause other engine components to show their age by increasing the pressure on them ?
How much did the job cost ?
Were you happy with the results ?

gday robbo.
one thing to be carefull if doing the valves is the heads have a tendancy to crack.
another thing to think about is yank the motor out and stick some rings and bearings in it.
after recently doing a v6 overhaul and heads on another its probly only a couple of hours more to pull the engine out and in.there quite simple to remove compared to some cars.you might save the time any way with all the pulleys ect you have to remove to get the heads off easier outa the vehicle.
heads/valves arnt a cheap job depends if it needs valve seats/guides ect you could be looking all up around $2000-2500.this includes labour.
a fully recod one fitted is around the $4000.

Hi Ian, if the rest of the truck is in good nick and you are going to keep it I would seriously think about getting the motor reco-ed or a replacement motor.
The problem of getting the valves done at that sort of K's is that the top end will work a treat but the piston rings are still 250,000 K's old and that will lead to other
problems.
But I think you allready suspected that.

Not keen on buying someone else's old engine (reconditioned or replacement) .
I can live with a bit of smoke on idle - been making smoke for a couple of years - and will put off having the valves replaced for now - or until it is absolutely necessary. Maybe a change in the old I use - rather than GTX Magnetic or GTX3 to a thicker oil might help a bit.
Yes - I plan on hanging onto the old truck for at least a few more years - there is absolutely no rust in it, and it's body and interior are in good nick, as is the rest of the mechanical stuff - recently hard front and back shocks replaced, tappets were replaced in November, a/c overhaul in Febuary, clutch overhauled late last year, it's got a new altenator and starter motor (summer last year cf NRMA roadsiide service) and a battery that's only a few months old.

What do you the engine has gone ?
I bought
mine brand-new and have looked after it even if it's done some long trips (up north and out west). I'm hoping to see 350,000 km before the engine is stuffed , crossing fingers.

Some people - whio buy 4x4s and treat them like a sportcars.
It's a truck - so should not be expected to perform like sportcar.
I've alway been gentle on the accelerator and tried not to push the engine. Rarely red line it.
