Hello,
Has anyone got a dual battery system setup on a GQ Patrol? If so where did the second battery fit in? I had one setup with a smaller battery in a tray running parallel with the firewall on the back passenger side. However this batterys capacity wasnt very good so I want to swap over to a larger battery like an N70Z. But I cannot seem to find a palce to fit this larger battery.
No doubt someone has already done this?

Thanks,

Troy.

ARB makes a battery holder which incorporates the plastic expansion chamber from the radiator. It fits in very neatly and can take a 17 plater battery which I have in my diesel 4.2. In fact I have two 17 platers. Bought a new Main Battery today.... Century Overlander and I also have a 5 yo Yuasa 17 Overlander as the auxilliary battery

We have the same sort of battery holder as Willem, and it takes the big batteries, but just be careful when the battery is put in, one slip and you need a new expansion chamber.

Cheers

Petrol, LPG or diesel? there is a difference.

Diesel:
The battery tray fits on the passengers side guard.

Look below the Radiator overflow bottle on the side of the inner guard, you will see 2 holes with nuts welded under them, or look from inside the wheel arch upwards, you will see them there too...
Thats where on the guard it mounts.

The other 2 mounts mount where the radiator overflow bottle is with longer screws, so you have both there. I run an exide extreme 700cca on mine there, without issue.

Troy,

I have RB30 ULP GQ, battery is in the same position (passenger side, parallel to firewall)the problems with fitting larger battery is usually the power steering reservoir one way, and the pipes for the airconditioner the other.

CrocBit,

Thats exactly what I have in my GQ the RB30 ULP. I notice in your photos you tow a trailer. How do you go with that? I have had a few people tell me that the RB30 is too under powered for a trailer but due to my expanding family (4 kids) I have no choice. Im thinking about getting a trailer to fit all the gear in.
Also which battery do you use to run your gear, the main battery or the second smaller battery? I was going to run my gear on the main battery and just use the second for starting becasue the main is bigger. However I was told to buy a deep cycle for my second battery because it will still last longer even though it is smaller than the main one. What do you think??
Ive got a camping trip planned for the long weekend on October 4th but that will be it before the wet season arrives (I live in Broome) But then I want to re-do my whole battery system and am looking for my best options.

Thanks,

Troy.

If you can fit a big battery in your factory location but only can fit a small second battery.....swap them around.

I could only just squeeze my Rodeo starting battery into the second battery location as it is so small. As it is it slightly squishes the air hose between the filter and the engine. However I can now fit the biggest I could find battery in the factory spot which is now my second battery.

I only have a 4cyl petrol though so not an issue starting from a small battery (which it came standard with anyway).

Sorry for the slow response Troy, but I have been away out bush for a while. Catchin barra and goose..
The RB30 towed the camper trailer through the GRR, Broome, and Kimberleys with 2 adults and 2-3 teenagers, and a loaded trailer. While not having much in overtaking mode, I found I could cruise comfortably at 100 - 110 on bitumen (without straining the beast) . Dirt/Sand is another matter, in 4x4 gets there but works harder at it (averaged 3-4 Km per litre on the GRR in heavy sand (made it OK where off road, too but don't expect fuel economy). You need rev it and to make sure that the second butterflies come in ok and the carby and the vacuum advance is working.
I use a 55ampere hour deep cycle as a second battery, with 80w solar panels on the roof rack, this lets me park for a few days with Evacool 80 litre and fluoro lights charged up. We didnt need to recharge unless stopped for 4 or more days (I have now added more battery capacity (as required) and can get 12-4 days without charging up)
Currently redoing all my fridge wiring and reconfiguring too. email me at crocbit@hotmail(dot)com if you want to compare notes

Crocbit,

Thanks for the reply. I have usually been happy with the way my RB30 handles the sand in 4wd. I have extractors on mine and I think it makes all the difference. When I am not towing anything it handles the sand really well even deep beach sand. Its good to know that I can still get 100-110 with a trailer then on the highway. It wont be loaded up that much anyway, usually just the four wheeler and some of the bulkier stuff like the fold up tables, jerrys etc.
Anyway I will let you know how it goes when we head off for four days this Friday.
I will take a photo of the car and trailer loaded up.

Thanks again,

Troy.
