I am looking to purchase an 80 series cruiser and cant believe how prices differ so much. Can someone out there please help.Obviously you get what you pay for however I am finding it difficult to work out best way to narrow down vehicles.I am looking for a diesel non turbo as i dont need nor afford turbo model.1990 GXL model has 205000kms cost 15000. 1996 model RV I think, 250000kms cost 20000,
extras are similar. Can someone give me an idea of the differences in these vehicles and suggest advantages and disadvantages or are they very much the same engine etc. Thanks in advance for any replies.Morto

pretender, I have an 80 series std. was looking for 2 years old 100 series, less than 50,000kms with cloth seats for 35-$40k in Perth 2 years ago(for about 6 months). couldn't find 1 so i saw 1 with 100+kms similar $. Then saw & bought mine 1991 <$20k with 142kms, 1 old owner. Very similar kms almost 1/2 price is a good truck but things age like faded paint, rust etc. I would sugest more kms yonger truck than less kms old truck. I saved $15k+ but ended up with an older 4wd. will do me for a few years though. hope this makes sence.

To give you some ideas, got my 80 std, 1month ago, 97 model with 220ks for 25,000. Good truck, with 2" lift kit, OME suspension, storage boxes, tyres 60%,
no rust, he even left a CB in it, rego till june 2005. Runs like a swiss watch, and it's a diesel.
Asking price was 27,000, it took me 1 1/2 hr of bargaining to settle the price at 25,000

Hi pretender:

My 1991 80 Series cost me $21k just over 2 years ago. It had 166,000 kms on it then and a comprehensive service history up to 100,000 km. No history after that.

Since then I have had it serviced every 5,000 km, and my mechanic tells me it is "as new". Gearbox is a bit notchy, and I recently had the steering box overhauled, but apart from that it has gone like a charm.

Beauty of this model is the availability of spares and "goodies". I have managed a roof rack, rear wheel carrier, centre roof console, storage _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx for just over $1,000, thanks mainly to watchng eBay.

Can't see me parting with it. It has gone everywhere without dramas.

Hi Morto,

Suggest you jump on the LCOOL list (Land Cruiser Owners On Line) - there is a dedicated mail list to the 80 series there (and also an extensive list of DIY mods for each model)

My troopy was originally 11 seater but i took out the middle facing side seats and put in a 3 person bench seat . I kept the rear side facing seats so capacity is 9 people . entry into the bench seat is thru the front door and squeeze in between the 2 front bucket seats . About 8 inch space in between the 2 front falcon seats . I can see where a third door would be handy . Seeing an adult trying too get in and out of the troopy from the bench seat can be anything from embarrasing to funny LOL .

Hi Pretender,

Look at:

www.autotrader.com.au

choosing the 4WD option and narrowing your search by state, years, dollars etc. will give you something to check out. FYI there are 62 landcruisers for sale 1995-2000 models in the range $10-20K - many have photos too.

I bought my GU this way - had a clean RAC/NRMA check and saved a bundle.

Good luck.

Gday,
I was in the same boat as you, looking for over 6 months for an 80 series that would suit my needs. I finally picked up a '91 turbo diesel with 300,000km, service history and all reciepts of work done over the years (big end bearings, power steering pump, injector pump, etc.). Aftermarket goodies included: hi lift springs and shocks, ARB bullbar and brushbars/sidesteps, warn winch, ARB air diff locks and compressor, safari snorkel and intercooler kit, IPF driving lights, kaymar rear bar and wheel carrier, dual batteries, sunroof, cd stacker, trailer brake unit, turbo timer and a few other extras. I had to weigh up the high milage versus the accessories but after haggling the price for a few days and bugging him, I eventually picked it up for $16,000. After renewing leaky front axle seal, and a cracked windscreen, I have a very capable vehicle in overall good condition. I guess it pays to shop around and have patience and time.

I have a 93 RV and is petrol. I'm not sure if this model come out in diesel.

Generally the RV is in between the Standard and GXL. It has all the holes for auto windows, locking etc and the altimeter/sub tank guage plus carpets etc.

The main difference between the RV and GXL is the body.

The GXL is approx 50mm wider but 50mm lower at factory dimensions. I found that useful as the RV already has that little bit of extra clearance.

I'm currently saving to put a 1hz diesel in it though as the old girl just hit 300,000kms.
regards
