What is the general opinion of which is the better on a Camper Trailer. On our Camp O Matic we have leaf springs. We went this way because I was told that in case of a mishap they are easier to repair and more readily available in the bush. I conceed that the Coil set up will give you a smoother ride etc but was nearly called a dill last night for suggesting these views. The other bloke obviously has coil springs on his Camper. What do you reckon???????

Very good Q and youll get diferent opinions, so here's mine

coils are great but the trailer rides higher, & some stub axels have been broken
Leafs are good the longer the beter less chance of fracture near the shackels most use/prefer land cruiser leafs due to length.

Nobby, there are undoubtedly some very good independent ones but the identification of the stub axle as a potential is correct, as is a shock absorber that holds the coils into place or the mounts for the shocker. Break part of that component and you lose your coil springing off into the wilderness you will want to enjoy. It may be where some of your family spend part of the holiday. I dramatise it, better for strength and simplicity for myself......

I have a leaf sprung trailer and really dont see any need for coils.

I have also seen a few broken stubs on independent trailer suspension and heard of a few more.

I think the simpler the better.

Leaf springs are far easier to repair and parts are more readily available. To smooth the ride out lower tyre pressure .....easy

Gaday Nobby. In all my travels I've seen or heard first hand of nearly 30 broken leaf springs on trailers yet haven't seen one broken coil (or stub axle on a coil trailer). May go some way to explain why the $25 K+ trailers usually fit coils.
When matched correctly with shockers, a coil sprung trailer rides as good if not better than the towing vehicle. That said, a leaf spring set up correctly will do a pretty good job.
The leaf sprung 60 series was a great Landcruiser, but with the coil suspension on the 80 you would never go back.
Just comes down to $$$$$$$$$.
Cheers Craig
