Looking at bolting in some recovery hooks in the chassis rails at the rear of the troopy. It doesn't have a towbar, or threads to put the hooks in. TJM would sell me the hooks but wouldn't touch it, but Opposite Lock would put em in. TJM wouldn't touch it coz the appropriate spot in the rails is only 3mm steel. They reckon over time it would fatigue.
So 3 options,
(1)$500 towbar(not towing so that's an expensive recovery point)
(2) Chains hooked around the chassis rails. (Time consuming each snatch)
or (3) Bolt in these hooks.
I know option 1 is the best, but I'd like to avoid it if possible. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with the other 2 options.

Second hand towbar should be cheap as chips for a troopy. They are dim-a-dozen cars.
Would be the safest, easiest option.
Chains round the chassis? Wouldnt want to get carried away snatching... what if you bend something?
If TJM said its 3mm steel, I wouldnt even THINK of it. The others may fit them, doesnt mean they are any good.

You'd think so huh! But coz it's a 78, they're rare. They're in wreckers, but I was under the impression that selling towbars in wreckers was illegal. Thought they had to destroy em. Coz it's rated, and if it has been in an accident it may be damaged. And if a 78 series towbar is in a wreckers, you can be sure it's been in an accident.
I just bit the bullet and went a brand spanker Haymen Reese.
Ho hum....

I bought my towbar from the wreckers. It's a Hayman-Reese one. Cost $125 which is heaps cheaper than new. Rodeo ones are all the same from 1988-2003 which is handy. The Rodeo it came off had hit something really really hard and the towbar was about all that would have been any good. Even the steel tray was bent and the impact was on the front end!
That was 3 years ago and I have had no problems with it.

Utemad, I think that is why wreckers aren't meant to sell em. Coz even a front end collision, will transfer the imapct throught the chassis and into the towbar. Unlikely it will effect it, but possible. But when it comes to a sideon collission, then the impact can weaken the TB.
Just what I heard, sounds like all the wreckers sell them though.
Cheers
