Hi one and all, now that i am a 'man of lesiure' i took the opportunity to take the jack down to the local exhaust centre and have a look see at the pipes . As some of you might know i have previously mentioned that the V6 exhaust has some penny washer style restrictors in the up pipes just forward of the join to the 'y' section. So i tell the boys about it and they give me the 'look' , no worries i say i'm paying no probs so whip off the pipes !! They were adamant that no manufacturer puts restrictors in the pipes, but bugger me if they didn't let fly with some expletives when the pipes dropped. There in the 'y' section of the pipe just aft of the join were a different set of restrictors to the ones i had seen on another jack, these were like a tapered piece of pipe with some holes drilled in them pressed into the pipe and spot welded in place. leaving the system effectively as twin 1 1/4 inch pipes !! Not nice mr holden i say... A couple of minutes with the oxy heating
the spot welds and prying them out and we had a nice open system. The pipes up to the cat converter are all mandrel bent and very
well made, the cat is an ok size - any bigger and you would put too much heat into the gearbox/trans case. But from the cat back it is only press bent garbage, so the best bang for the buck is to just replace the cat back section with a 2 1/2 mandrel bent pipe and single chamber quality muffler, cost about $450. Cost to remove the restrictors and refit pipes with new gaskets and bolts - $50 yee ha...
So road test time, fire it up and you can tell straight away it is breathing better, out on the road it acellerates beautifully with only 1/4 throttle and is actually quieter than before, 3rd gear takes you straight up to 100kph before you know it. The resonance between 3k and 4k is gone and it will pull cleanly from 60 to the limiter in 5th no dramas. It is now actually hard to hold 100 on the flat because the throttle blade is only just cracked open so the future economy readings should be interesting :-))) The only down side i have noticed so far is that there is some cam chatter in the pipe when changing up while going hard but it only seems evident when trailing the throttle from 5k or higher - a small price to pay i say.
So i can highly reccommend this little project to al the v6 owners ( Savvas and Adam especially) Happy driving :-)))))))

Sorry all forgot to mention this is on a 3.5 V6, not sure if the restrictors are fitted to the 3.2 as
well but it's a fair bet they have them also.

What's the go with these manafacturers??? Same deal with the Nissans, but they overfuel them? Doesn't make any sense!

Yeah most manufacurers overfuel under full load as a protection mechanism, i say if you are stupid enough to flog a car sensless on a 45 degree day fully loaded then you deserve to blow it up.. Mate if you have a gen3 commodore you can pick up 25-30 kw straight away just by running the ls1 edit software and dynotuning it properly !! catering to the lowest common denomanator i suppose .

Na the rest of the system is still standard with 120k on it , after taking it for a run now i think i will just wait until the muffler rusts or i give it a good hit on something then go the mandrel option from the cat back. with the quality of the front pipes i probably wont bother doing the headers unless i crack a manifold etc. cheers mate

sorry mate no idea, i only found this by accident , certainly holden didnt know about it or any of the exhaust
places. But toyota are renouned for restrictive pipes in general.

Basic stuff, unifilter high flow foam element , cyclone removed from guard inlet pipe(
mine was blocked and never worked anyhow), extra airbox inlet , larger diameter inlet pipe still to be built with greater radius bend at throttle body. I'd fit a centrifugal supercharger if i had the 6k to spare :-)))

Those restrictions are to help low end torque, manufacturers dont do anything for nothing, those inserts cost money to install and make....
Having said that Id take em out too... I know Foresters have them in there also.

Excellent information. I had thought about putting extractors on my '98 Jackeroo but this change should sought nicely.
Mine is a automatic and I get about 18 ltr per 100km. I would like to know what change you get on your fuel economy. Keep us posted if you can.

Pre restrictor removal with enthusiastic driving
mine gave 13.5 l/100
cruising it gave 12 flat or better. The auto does suck a lot of power.

It's really quite amazing what difference a decent exaust makes!
I had found that some dimwit had put 2 x 2" mufflers and 2" pipe on the surf, but the factory pipe was 2.5" from the turbo back to the first muffler. Once a lukey perfermance muffler was put in and the two crappy mufflers removed, some mandrel bent 2.5" pipe the surf is using crap loads less fuel and actually pulls at high revs instead of sounding like a vacume cleaner and not going anywhere until you took your foot of and let it go up a gear.

yeah turbos love next to no backpressure on them, a common trick with them is to fit up an oversize dump pipe straight to the back of the turbo, this has the effect of stopping the spinning action of the exhaust gasses and greatly improving the flow, as
well as getting it spooled up quicker.
Did you notice the boost coming on earlier now ?

To be honest I've never had a problem with turbo lag, I think it's the auto box/torque convertor configuration, it seems to let the engine rev freely up to a level where the turbo kicks in, its HEAPs beter than the Auto GU III 3.0TD at work, it's got awful turbo lag from a standing start.
But the main difference was in high reves, esepecially when climbing long hills, the auto box keeps dropping back gears and then it would struggle. Now it hops back and pulls then goes back into torque lock like it should.

I have got my Jack booked in on Thursday for a service, coopers 265/75/16 and restrictors to come out. The place I go have got a jack too and he is very much looking forward to having a look at
