Ok..so it's an old topic (seems done to death by the looks of things)... but, I still can't make my mind up if buying a 3.0TD is just asking for trouble or not. I had have my eye on one and now I'v read everything on the ZD30 I'm having second thoughts. Any feedback from "4WD users" more than welcome. Thanks .

Just buy it ! I went off the 3lt after reading all the posts, because I wanted auto T/D I spent an extra $20.000 plus to get a Toyota ,bugger Nissan for not giving the choice of auto in the 4.2.

ahhh...no, can't quite manage the funds yet for GU III (series3). The series 2 I'm looking at is round $30k. It'll be my first 4WD. The initial look into it was good, then I got to reading up on the engine issues and it's starting to go downhill a bit. DAMN NISSAN and their design team / person! No doubt follow my wallet like I always seem to do.

No one has actually given cold hard facts on the number of 3.0lt Patrols that have had the engine problem. The very early models appear to have been the main culprit, but the later ones (late 2001 onwards) look like not being a problem.

Considering that Nissan have been selling somewhere in the order of 6000 Patrols per year (add to that now the Navara), which have predominantly been the 3.0lt (one report I read said 70%), then the reported half dozen or so on a few forums (often the same vehicles at that) don't really add up to all that much.

If it was that bad, you'd expect a bit more general publicity in the magazines etc. Some just like to bag the 3.0lt for some reason, based on the early models, and are not willing to admit that perhaps the problems have been resolved.

"If it was that bad, you'd expect a bit more general publicity in the magazines etc."

It made an article in The Age. Bloke in the club brought it in one night.

Truckster

I hadn't heard anything about an article in Age before. Might have missed it in a previous post.

Do you know any quick way of checking out the article ie. can it be viewed on the Net?

Articles like that could be handy to those people who do have trouble with the earlier motors and get the "didn't know there was a problem" response from their dealer.

Please let me know.

cheers

I'm not suggesting there haven't been any reports, but if there have been, they seem to be so few and far between to almost be of any real consequence. Out of curiosity, what did the Age article actually say and how old was the article?

I just traded my 2.8 td GU 1999 after many woes with the gearbox and clutch. I decided on the 4.2 as we tow a van. Just took delivery of it last Friday. The dealer gave me a loan 3litre for a couple of weeks whilst mine had some modifications done to it. The 3.0lt went ok, but just seemed to work harder to achieve the same result. Today I drove my new 4.2 up to Mt Buller, what a pleasure to drive, craps all over my old 2.8.

After owning the 4.2 for four days, the verdict.......im in love!!!!!

ps it also came with some nice treats

Roly

You suprise me.

In previous post you have been defensive of the 3.0Tdi and talked about the 'teething problems' of any new motor. You stood tall and bullet proof as if it was your only child!

I thought you loved it.

Was that a different Roly?

i was defensive of ppl saying all ZD30's are crap

i wouldnt buy a 2000-2001 zd30 unless it has a new engine already

the airflow sensors issues got to me inthe end, and i went oldschool 4.2 to get bush reliabilty for my move to perth...

Mike,

I don't know where you are located but I have seen a couple of 3.0 GUII's with new motors with one advertised in the Age Sat before last. I wouldn't consider one unless it has had the new engine installed.

You gotta wonder WTF when $60,000 cars (when new) are being advetised at only 4 years old with "new engine!".
That's what turned me off buying a Land Rover as that was a common selling point. "New engine only done 5,000ks" The cars not even 5 years old, WTF??

But I spose if they have sorted out the problems.... But I don't know...

mmmmmm how to answer this
yes the 2000 model has problems & yes you will be taking a risk
but & the but is a big one you take a risk with any second hand car you buy.
the advantage of the gu11 motor problem is that nissan are covering the cost of failures , so its mainly the inconvienance of it going off the road for about a month while it is fixed.

am i happy with my choice of a guii ?
all thing cosidered yes
the price fitted my budget
the vehicle fitted my requirements
& nissan stood up to be counted when it was required.

but if you can't handle the probabilty of a problem or are going to go to remote area's, consider weather it is worth the risk.

Hi Mike -
I had a few probs with my 2003 3lt Patrol at the end of last year and the beginning of this. So much so that the Nissan is now called "The Slut" - the name being coined because I had to travel from Pt Hedland to Broome at a max speed of 60kph in 'limp home mode'!! - More that 10 hours.
The long and the short of the result is that all problems were fixed under warranty and we have done some extremely rugged Kimberley trips since. She is still the "Slut" but is going well and I really have no regrets buying it. There are literally thousands of them come through Broome every year as well as hundreds of the buggers that live here all the time.
Regards

Why did it go into limp home mode? Is it an auto?

Hi Leroy'
No it is a manual but when a computer component - in this case airflow and fuel supply goes wrong it returns to a naturally aspirated engine apparently.

Mike'
12 months or so ago I had the same concerns after read articles etc. In the end paid 2000 more for a top notch 4.2 with 6months more rego and warranty and bullbar and lights. Better cond than the particular 3.0 that i was chasing. I have run up 40k in the 12 mnths with nothing worse than an air cond belt going and the cd playing up under extended warranty. The 4.2 runs around 12 ltrs to the 100k but is abit thirstier when towing the 18' poptop. Personally it would be the 4.2 every time.
