I am looking at buying a 1991 4 runner SR5 Limited with 207,000km, Duel Fuel, auto, a/c, p/s, c/c. It looks in great condition. I am yet to have it looked at by my mechanic, however i would like to feedback on any problems or issues this model has and what can be expected with this many km's. Are these problems and issues easy to fix both for parts etc and costs.
I have been told that having it on LPG can decrease the Life of the engine?
Majority of the driving will be bitumem around
Melbourne (CBD driving and
parking about once to twice a month). The other time will be trips to the eyre perninsula (hopefully with some sand driving if I can do a course and get all the equipement before mid November), aryes rock (as my g/f has not been there yet), flinders rangers etc. No real isolated driving, I would prefer to get experience and a later model (less km's) 4wd for that.
It will be a big move for me to get the 4runner as presently I drive a 2 door sports car with Leather and all extra's with 50,000kms less. So I need to determine all situations and issues.
Thanks

It would be in the higer range of the scale on klms for that petrol motor (from what others say on other forums). But then for its age, it isnt many that bad. It is all depending on what its been used for.
Also depends on what sort of price.
You mention "I would prefer to get experience and a later model (less km's) 4wd for that. "
Save your $, and get the later model truck now, what you want now. This way you dont have to spend money twice setting up 2 different trucks for touring/
camping etc. Somethings can be taken from truck to truck, others will be a waste of $...
YMMV

I have got a mate who just bought a V6 Pajero (1991) 3.0L V6, with 215k on the clock, same size and configuration as the Tojo I guess, so a pretty good comparrison. The motor runs fine, but is leaking oil from the front pretty bad. He has to change the timing blets anyway so is hoping it's just front seal and he'll be laughing. If your 4 runner hasn't had the timming belts done for the second time (they should be done every 100k) then you'll need to do them as
well (unless it uses a chain or somthing else).
They way he looked at it was: The car body and interior is in showroom conition, it's been serviced every 10k since new and it's stamped in the book (the only one I've ever see stamped from 0k to 200k!!). The motor is probally not going to last forever, he got it for just over $8k from a dealer and noted that he could buy a brand new 3.0L Mitsubishi V6 motor for $2990 inc GST plus fitting. So WORST case scencario he's got a $13k Pajero in showroom condition with a brand new motor. Pretty good buying IMHO.
So in short, if the cars in really good nick, and at the right price and your aware that the motor is not going to out live you pet budgie and put a few grand aside for that, then you're probally on a winner.

Hi There, I have just only purchased a '91 4runner with 245,000 on the clock. Its also on gas (duel fuel) and so far so good. It is the 4 cylinder petrol(22r motor) which is much cheaper to rebuild than the v6 or diesels when or should the time come.
Before that i had a '85 4runner for the last 12 years which had nearly 400,000 on the clock when i sold it last weekend. After owning this vehicle i have a lot of faith in the 4runners.
Running on gas is ment to shorten the life of the valve/tappet gear to some extent so i have heard, so be aware of this. Not sure wheather your looking at the v6 or 4 cylinder, V6 is pretty pricey to rebuild should you have to cross that bridge.
Good Luck
Tom
