I'm going to be within a 150 k's of Thargomindah in the near future while running north from Tibooburra through the Bulloo swamp area - wondered if anyone could comment on the value of 'Thargs' as place to camp for a couple of nights.....any attractions ? Fish in the Bulloo ? Any comment appreciated this way.

Hi Banjo

150klms is a bit out of the way...but...just depends on what you want to see out there?

We were there 2 years ago but only for a night.
They had recently opened up the caravan/camping ground right next to the Bulloo River, so we stayed there.
We went for a nice walk along the river after setting up and before dusk.
We were on a patch of very green soft grass with a bit of a walk to the amenities, the rest of the area was ready to be laid.
The new covered steel community kitchen/dinning facilities was also especially nice, complete with thermo boiler for tea/coffee.
As for Thargomindah they have a real working bore, there is a coin donation museum shack next to it and a huge windmill also.
If you end up going try to get there as early as you can in the morning, it's a great pic opportunity and the contrasting colours (back then in mid July) were amazing.

Hope this helped.

Went there last year, though only overnight on return from Innamincka. Was amused though to hear its claim to fame as "the third city in the world to have hydroelectric street lighting, after London and Paris"...

D'day Banjo,

Went through there in May. Stopped at the pub on the west side of town for road condtions as the tourist info was shut. Had a beer with the barman who has been working in Thargomindah for years. It looked like a nice town. If you do end up going through, see if you can work out the puzzle above the cooler at the pub. Goes somethign like:

YCHJCYTDFTRFDSTY

We did not stop there, we ended up camping at Noccundra.

Wazza.

G'day banjo,

Was there in july 04 for 2nites threw the tent up down on the back fence line near the river, It is a nice place ,try and visit the Desert Rose Gardens it's really interesting. The bloke who runs it is a real outback character, he planted all the trees and shrubs himself. His wife makes quondong and fig jams and free tasteing as well and its cheap, worth buying . It takes adout 1.5 hours for the tour and at the end he asks for a donation. But wait for it ........its for the RFDS NOT HIMSELF!!!! nice people

regards jeff

ps I think it is worth a return visit

Noccundra is the place to camp but be very carful where you pitch your tent.
Many years ago you had to camp in the billybong oppersite the pub.....i found out the hard way some people are very careless digging holes for the loo. Dig deaper people!!!!!
North of thargomindah is the opal mining area thats a must to go for a night. Up on the iron ore plato on the western side there is one area that dosnt have gibber on it and you can camp there.

To me, Thargomindah is a compulsory stop over. The pub is the best I've been to in Australia, and for $5 per person, you can stay in the bunkhouse out the back. Why bother camping!! The locals are a friendly bunch, and the publican makes sure everyone knows each other, and then puts on some good tucker for dinner. Is there anything to see?? Well, in a town of 13, not really, but take the drive out to Currawinya NP (home of the Bilby's) and a day won't be enough time out there.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback team ! Sounds good to me ..... small - quiet - remote - character - and a river (possibly dry but) - thats what I want when I go to a town outback - will sort the issue of fuel costs for the distance out of the way and make a decision....thanks.
