Four week ago I went to the
Cooktown police station for advice on the status of the
CREB track and was told that not only was it opened but the road was pretty good. I then rang QPWS Office in
Atherton for a permit to visit the Roaring Meg area and was told that while I could go to Roaring Meg the
CREB track was closed indefinitely - it had been closed at the direction of the Wet Tropics Management Authority and I understand that it is advertised on their website. The QPWS officer I spoke to was quite abrupt and she also told me that the
Cooktown police had no right advising that it was OK to travel the track and that she and her superiors would be ringing them immediately to tell them so. Having said that there are definitely no signs saying that it is closed and there are no locked gates - so if you're willing to chance it I say have a go.
Cheers
Pete

My brother in law and myself did the track yesterday the track has been recently graded and wasn't difficult at all. BUT If hit with some rain we could see that it could be VERY dangerous (a few very steep hills, clay on top) the last section after Roaring Meg is veerrryyyy dusty. We went to the parks office in
Cairns and they said no permit is required for the
creb track only a permit is required to go into roaring meg (worth the trip and walk) and costs nothing. Parks usually takes two days to issue or as we did that morning if very quiet, Ann at the office was very helpful.
On a side note it is sad to see some 4wdrivers ingnoring requests not drive closer to the
roaring meg falls thus causing problems for those of us that try to do the right thing (one bad apple).
Regards
Craig

Hi Craig,
Can confirm first hand your comments about the track being difficult and even dangerous in wet conditions. I travelled the CREB many years ago when the track had been subjected to several days of localised rainfall. What is normally an easy half days drive took us two days; it was nearly 11pm on the first day before we conceded defeat at a very steep, muddy
hill and susequently spent a very wet uncomfortable night camped on the track (as there was simply nowhere to get off). Eventually it was only a couple of vehicles fitted with mud chains that were able to make any progress and they winched the rest of us through some difficult spots. We encountered landslides, fallen trees, flooded creeks and leaches galore (yuck). Mind you, we all had a ball and would have turned around and done it again in an instant! The scenery and
Roaring Meg Falls were great.

Hey Rossco did you see that final in the Getaway trip to
Cape York last night? We were at the Gunshot crossing when Ben Darke come a cropper. To his credit he got straight back on the bike and attempted the crossing again - succeeding the second time. It was a bit of a buzz for the crew from my club to get on TV albeit for about 15 seconds.
Cheers

Hey Flappan - the show was taped during the first week of August 2004. Ben Darke and his crew were still at
Bamaga when we arrived there on the 4th.
Cheers
