"The issue of who has right of way on narrow roads in Alpine areas has come before the Association and it is worth reminding members about the standard Alpine Road protocols.

Vehicles travelling uphill have right of way over those travelling down.

Remember that a vehicle that stops while going up hill will not restart in many circumstances, however the vehicle on the downhill run can just roll on down.

So next time you find yourself in this situation stop and give way to the uphill traveller"

Browny brings up a good point. (which I agree with)

Truckster,
I received that also & of course will follow proticol, but I'm not sure if I agree 100%

If on one of our steep narrow tracks and come accross another vehicle in opposite direction with not enough room to pass, is it not easier for the vehicle coming up to reverse down to a suitable position rather than the vehicle coming down try to reverse up a steep incline where momentum and speed are required?
(especially A tojo with those dodgy front diffs..:-) "

Interested on your and others thoughts.

I tend to back up and pull over more often than not. I find it easier to do that than wait for the other person to make up their mind what they are going to do. Plus I tend to travel solo a fair bit and always give way to convoys if practical.

I guess the give way to traffic going up is fine so long as each party knows in advance the other is coming, this allowing the one heading down hill to find somewhere to pull over.

"Remember that a vehicle that stops while going up hill will not restart in many circumstances, however the vehicle on the downhill run can just roll on down."

If they meet unexpectedly and each has stopped I guess that both vehicles may have equal trouble trying to head uphill, whether trying to go forwards or backwards. In such a case commonsense would dictate that he who has the easiest path to get out of the way should take it - irrespective of which way he has to go. And then the issue of numbers in each group comes into play. Can't really be any hard and fast rules due to the different circumstances of each encounter.

I think it should be hierarchical, like Mitsubishi Delicas get right of way over everything, then closely followed by Toyota's, then Nissan's..........................Yada, Yada, then lastly... Land Rovers!!

Now, if you have 2 vehicles which are the same.............. the one with the higher numbers ( newer ) number plate wins. If they, heavens forbid, both have personalised plates, then the one with the most letters wins. If............ if............. they both have the same amount of letters, then the most ballsy, blokey, catchy name wins. If, and only if, they are BOTH good names, then, well.......... I dunno....................

Bugger it............ perhaps Trucksters idea isn't so bad after all.................

Okay.... I'm ducking for cover right about.................. NOW!!

Cheers

Hey Truckster,

You raise some interesting points.

The biggy is for common sense to prevail but we all know that's also the most difficult one.

Up here in Queensland if you are on Fraser Island for instance, the general rule is that you let the guy on the downhill run through as it is near impossible to reverse up some of the steep sand tracks. That gets further complicated if you are trying to pass something like one of the tour buses on the inland tracks.

I've seen a few decent Mexican standoffs over the years so it is definitely something that a lot of people are unsure about.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers
