I sometime back was asking about snorkels and a way to get SWMBO to approve the purchase of one.
Well in a way un-intentional to achieve this we had a night drive up thru the Watagan SF a weekend ago.
We came a cross a mud hole and a mate in front went thru and with some effort and no problem out the other side, so, I thinks (bad move) I will follow.
As soon as we hit the hole!!! It went dark (lights under mud) mud run up to the windscreen, the dashboard lit up like a Xmas tree, the Mav was making some stranger noises than usual, handbrake and me were saying this is not a good idea in another language. Forgot Ol’ mate in front was lifted by 6 inches, we are only 3.
Motor still running we backed out with some absolute luck Steam and smoke filled the night air. Result….Sucked mud into the pre-filter, sucked the air inlet pipe almost together, sucked mud up to the main filter (this not the lucky part) Took it all apart and cleaned it all out as best I could and only a few drops of mud made it past the main filter. Later found alternator full of mud and pulled it down replaced brushes & bearings which fixed that bit.
Ol’ mate says “You should have had a
Snorkel” . Mrs mud lark says “Would this have happened if we had one”. Unanimous answer “NO”. Mrs mud lark says “You better get one”. So that is a definite approval and a bloody idiot way to get it (un-intentional of course). Even with a
snorkel fitted we wont be doing any more deep mud work as it took soooooo long to clean up the mess, and the luck was it didn’t get into the motor and blow it. In future we will take the track around to be on the safer side.

Wouldn't be without my
snorkel. There may be times when you can't easily avoid going through mud/
water and they're are cheaper than a new motor.
