Hi all
Another problem. Have removed front drive shaft and locked centre diff after uni joint died. Can I drive 1000km to Adelaide, or do I have to get it fixed up here?
Cheers

Hi Jiarna,

not sure what you mean by locked centre diff. have you removed this also??

solong as there is no power getting to the front diff i would presume that you could drive in 2 wheel drive to adelaide. if im wrong in my opinion than the other forumites will say so or confirm what i have said.

hope all goes well for you and you have a safe trip back.

Regards

Bob

Bob,
My understanding is without the centre diff (in transfer case), in a tojo being locked, all the drive will be directed to the easiest path. I.E. like when a wheel is of the ground on a front or rear diff, so if jiarna has removed an axle in the front diff thats where all the drive will be directed because of less resistance, therefore by locking the centre diff drive is forced to go to the rear axles as well, enabling him to drive!

As I said thats my understanding of it anyway, how far you can drive like that I have know idea.

Browny,
P.S. Good luck jiarna

Hi John,
With centre diff lock enaged and the front propshaft removed, it should be quite Ok to drive in 2WD back to Adelaide - provided you don't strike rain on the dirt roads and need 4WD!

Jiarna, a mate of mine drove his from Dorado Downs to Adelaide as you desribed, only about 200Kms but no dramas at all. He drove it for a couple of days before he could get a new diff to put in, I reckon you should be OK.

Nice Rig pic, Navaraman. I assume that was taken on the Monarto weekend get-together?

I had a problem with my front diff and did the same - removed the front propeller shaft and locked the centre diff. The Toyota dealer said it was fine to drive around like that till they could get a new diff. Probably did about 1,000km like that.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll leave it until I get to Adelaide in November, as getting parts and service up here is expensive (freight mostly, even on 'freight paid' items I usually have to pay for the last stage).

Cheers

Hi Jiarna, there is a Toyota Dealer in Clare....or what about Port Augusta? Surely there must be something a bit closer than Adelaide.

Hi Glenn
When I leave Oodnadatta, I have to have a plan of what to do and where to go for the 2 weeks, as it costs a fortune for travel (no quick trips to get work done on the vehicle, much as I'd like to!!). Next leave period is in November, and we have to go to Adelaide to see my wife's family - so the plan is to get the job done then when we have somewhere to stay and are in the vicinity of parts etc.
My original post was to find out if it was false economy to leave it until then, or if I should get it done up here before I left in Nov.
Cheers
John

One thought,
Are there any issues with oil loss through the now open transfer case hole where the front driveshaft was?
Dust & grit ingress maybe?
Good luck
Neil.

Hi Neil,

Not a problem, because there's no 'hole'. The propshaft bolts onto flanges at both the diff and transfer case ends - the flange and shaft going into the case (& diff) remain in place.

Well, at least that's how real 4WDs (Land Rovers!) do it. I presume these inferior oriental copies do it a similar way. [This is ajoke, non-LR owners, OK?]
