So this Friday I'm heading of to the Cape!

Just sorting out some of the last minute details and was wondering if anyone can point out a website or if you happen to know what area's are now 'dry zones'. I have been told that if you are found with alcohol within these dry area's that the fines are very hefty.

As we will be carrying a few cold ones in the esky we need to know exactly how the rules work, and where they apply.

Thanks in advanced,
Rhubarb.

Rhubarb,

Contact Norm at the Bamaga Tavern, mention his red wine drinking mate - Chris from the Resort and he will advise - have a good trip and check out the Jardine river camping spots NORTH of the Jardine Ferry - but look out for the short legged scaly terriers - also check out a place called Cypress Waterholes, also if you can find Barby and Rob they caretake a Pearl Farm out from Sommerset and will look after you.

Check with 4wd Bus Tour operators in Cairns for Road Conditions, but last year wet didnt start until early November.,

Any further info you can contact me on my e-mail direct - and have a good one, but lookout for the grog - including price, availability and fines.

Rhubarb,

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past and some good links.

Check the archives for some very useful information and links to govt sites which may answer your questions.

Just back from a trip into the Weipa area and there are restrictions in the Mapoon region.

$100 PER CAN was the going rate for any cans in excess of the allowed possession limit per vehicle of 24 mid strength or light per. Don't know what would happen if you had super or spirits etc

Was told of road blocks and VERY thorough vehicle searches being conducted throughout the cape and the police are not necessarily in marked vehicles or in uniform. Witnessed a large number of police flown in to conduct an operation.

The risks far outweigh the rewards.

Check out this site http://www.mcmc.qld.gov.au/community/restricted.php before you go. There are a number of communities that have restrictions before you get to Coen. The one that springs immediately to mind is Wujal Wujal on the Bloomfield river - this is a zero alcohol community so be very careful. If you don't get all the answers from the website above given them a ring. I found them to be very helpful before travelling to the Cape in July.
Cheers

Just got back from the cape, Treat all abriginal areas as dry ie NO GROG at all. That being said north of the Jardine you can have 2 cartons of mid or light no fortified wine & I think 2 bottles of wine. Abroginal areas include Kowinyama, Lochardt river, Mapoon etc, a clue is often given by the amount of empty cans at the turnoff and along the roads into these places. It was on the news last night of extensive raids over the weekend where vehicles were carefully searched - a lot was found and confiscated.
