I am thinking of buying an on-road Jayco Hawk/Eagle for a trip around oz next year. Will not be doing any serious off road stuff but may do a fair bit of dirt/gravel road driving. Has anyone had experience with the on-road Jayco campers on these types of roads?? Have heard mixed reports. Am thinking in particular of the road into
El Questro in the Kimberleys. Travelling with wife and two small children in a 3.4L Prado. The other option is a Cub spacematic camper. Any advice/ comments on the on-road Jayco's ability on dirt or the Jayco vs Cub debate would be appreciated.
Thanks

G'day Pon
I just left El Q a week ago and am towing a Jayco Finch Outback myself. I don't believe you'll have any trouble taking an on road into El Q fro the Kunnunara end. All up should only be about 40-50kms. Just drive to the conditions. Only concern is if your early in the dry season the river crossings might to high.
Having just done the gibb and
Mitchell Plateau, El Q was our favourite, so much in such a small area. It very touristy though.

travelled halfway round oz a few years ago in a jayco swan, no huge problems.
just take a riveting gun, 2 x 2" wood and some
tools to carry out running repairs on the bits that fall off, and say goodbye to the steps into the van.
good vans otherwise.
nb if the van has pull out beds at ends, we had a lot of condensation in the mornings dripping in my face (joys of winter travel), cured by tying a big piece of 1" foam over the canvas roof.

There is a jayco users group--ask them. The address is http//:au.groups.yahoo.com/group/JUGA/
Good luck, but the big thing is not some much the van but the speed at which you drive.
