Naracoorte Caves
Anyone been there??
Loved Jenolan Caves, hated the toilet that they call a motel..

What did you think of these caves, what is there, how many, worth going?

The Naracoorte Caves World Heritage inscription recognises the extensive fossil record of the Park. The caves have acted as pitfall traps, collecting animals for at least 500,000 years, preserving the most complete fossil record we have for this period of time. The bones of Megafauna species such as Thylacoleo carnifex (Marsupial Lion), Thylacine, Zygomaturus and sthenurine kangaroos are found within the 20 fossil deposits found to date. Naracoorte Caves contain clues to help interpret the geological and evolutionary history of Australia

Truckster,

There are several caves at Naracoorte and surrounding district.

I found them very good. The Princess Margaret Rose caves south of Mt Gambier are also very good.

Although I haven't been to Jenolan caves, I am sure you will enjoy the SE caves.

Geoff.

Not expensive considering the infrastructure that they have.

The cost from memory was around $10 - $12 per adult for a single cave.
It gets cheaper if you do multiple cave tours.

We went last year & they are really well setup.
Well worth the effort if you are in the area, lots of different caves, tours start in caves at different times so its never much of a wait. They have adventure caving too.... if your feeling adventursome (is that correct)?

G'day Truckster,

I've been going there off and on for over 40 years.

They always fascinated me as a kid, and now they are being administered by the National Parks they are great.

Good accomodation in Naracoorte, and more importantly, they are stuck fair between two of Australia's greatest wine growing regions - Padthaway to the North, and the legendary Coonawarra area just down the road to the South.

Some enjoyable headaches to be had :)

enjoy

Bruce,

the Princess Margaret Rose caves are low key compared to the Naracoorte World hetigae listed caves. They are a national park (or similar), however, I beleive a "subcontractor" runs the opeartion.

BUT

They are fantastic in their own right.

What's more, the spot has a sensational campground. We took the kids there for about 5 easters in a row, along with numerous other families who heard about the fun we had there. Heaps to do from this spot as a base camp. Hard to get sick of this region.

You could do some of these things:

canoeing
sleeping
hiking
walking
fishing
picnicing
touring
camping
sightseeing
caving
exploring
holidaying

OR
go to Nelson/Mt Gambier/Portland/Pt Macdonnell,. See Donavans, the ultimate movie/soapie setting village

OR
go to heaps of other parks, Bridgewater Bay, etc.

'nuff said, just

GO

If you've ever wanted to be scared, stuck, and shlt scared, try adventure caving at Naracoorte.
They supply the overalls, for what it's worth. I'm a fat dude, and they got em for me!!
NPWS camp site is okay I guess. Bit crowded, sort of like a caravan park really.
If your staying in a B&B, or Motel, plenty to choose from, but I can't recommend any.
I am assuming you're rolling this in with the Robe trip? If so, you will probably be all beached out, and would want to head inland for a look.

Cheers
