Am about to purchase 04 landrover discovery. Want to know if 255/85R16 tyres will fit without impinging on body when offroad. Standard tyres are 255/65R16

Am picking up vehicle on Friday so would appreciate answer prior to then

The original Michelins are very good for most uses. What sort of tyre are you changing to? I use STT 245/75s for trips and they just fit. The originals on mine (03) are 235/70s.

thanks for the reply. I dont pickup the discovery country model till Friday but am lead to believe the standard tyres are 255/65R16 & more of a highway design tyre. Was hoping to have some larger diameter tyres fitted prior to pickup to increase diff & general ground clearance as well as an all terrain tread to suit our requirements here in the Pilbara region of WA. Have since spoken to the tyrepower dealer in Karratha & apparently the tyres I was keen on (255/85R16) are to big in diameter & will certainly impinge on the body off road so unless I fit up some high lift suspension I will probably be stuck with the originals for now. Will give them a bash in the scrub anyway & see how they perform. Have generally been a defender owner so am hoping the discovery can perform close to the same offroad. Am sure it will be an improvement on the rear end on the long runs anyway. Are the tyres you use coopers or another brand, if so have you had a good run out of the coopers & what sort of terrain do you generally travel. HAve you had any issues with scuffing/body contact in rough terrain with the 245/75s.

On another point how have you found the discovery offroad. The unit I am getting is the TD5 same as my defender, would be interested in any info or thoughts

Looking forward to your reply

GB,
my spare set are Cooper STTs. They look good and haven't had any punctures in 20,000km but the amount of wear is quite alarming. The have done two trips : one from near Canberra to Broome via dirt rds ((Gunbarrelll, Sandy Blight J T, Desert Rd, Wapet Rd), and the other to Alice then around the Centre.
I know that after previous trips the Michelins looked pretty cut about, and I lost a few through undetected punctures, but they are a great tyre otherwise. I also fitted Smartire to the rims with the STTs so can monitor tyre temp and press continuously.
Back on the Michelins after the Coopers and they feel much more secure.

Saw some pirelli scorpions the other day on a 04 td5 Discovery. Looked a slightly more agressive tyre than the Michelins fitted to the country classic. They were 255/65 as per originial on country. So it wont give you the hoped for raised ride height. Suggest you just try it first, and if you want more grip the Scorpions look like they will do the job

I have a counyry calssic and it has exceeded my expectations, economical, comfortable at the end of 4 hours in the saddle (my longest trip on one go at this stage) Tows my 17'6 tandem very well
